The Best New Brunches To Know About

For many of us, nothing marks the arrival of the weekend like a lazy weekend brunch. From Michelin-legend Angela Hartnett’s new morning repast, to The Hoxton’s newcomer Rondo, here are some of the best places to book into across the capital.

Rondo, Holborn

Coming from the Hoxton Hotel collective, newly opened Rondo’s brunch might seem humble, but its credentials are numerous. Heading up the kitchen is ex St John chef, Chris Gillard, which explains why the menu is refreshingly unfussy. Think laid back gems like nduja scrambled eggs and sourdough, or fenton eggs, any style, on toast – all of which can be consumed in the group’s signature cool surroundings.

Liv, Belgravia

Among the sleek architectural lines of Liv, Belgravia’s latest acclaimed establishment, you’ll find chef Mark Jarvis, previously known for his work at Farringdon hotspot Anglo. Since reopening, Liv now offers a brunch where banana bread, buckwheat pancakes with seasonal berries and the best eggs Florentine in London are orders du jour.

Kolamba, Soho

If egg hopper with perfectly seasoned kithul-glazed bacon; a pol sambol toastie with date and lime chutney; or Kolamba granola with fresh shavings of coconut aren’t enough to instantly transport you to Sri Lanka, then not much will. Soho's trusty Sri Lankan, Kolamba has launched a new weekend brunch menu, with owners Eroshan and Aushi Meewella carefully designing a complimentary warm interior with cascading greenery and exposed brickwork.

Daffodil Mulligan, Shoreditch

Opening to rave reviews last year, Daffodil Mulligan has just launched a new brunch menu under the watchful eye of chef-icon Richard Corrigan. It’s in Corrigan’s DNA to serve up unpretentious and quality, modern Irish food. Irrespective of the trendy interior design of this Old Street location, expect the atmosphere to be old school and friendly. An extra bonus is it’s a 50-cover restaurant – so there’s plenty of room for social distancing.

Nutshell, Covent Garden

Iran’s abundance of spices, herbs, fruits and nuts define its fragrant dishes – and Nutshell’s brunch menu is testament to just that. Stand outs on the new weekend brunch menu include saffron and sour cherry Sheermal French toast with mixed berries, sumac clotted cream and candid orange; and Ghatogh poached eggs with butter beans, turmeric, apricot & dill.

Café Murano, Bermondsey

For the first time ever, guests can now enjoy an Italian-style brunch by Michelin-starred chef, Angela Hartnett, at her latest Café Murano opening in Bermondsey. Enjoy yours in the surrounds of industrial lights and an open kitchen, and there’s also a coveted bar space for those who enjoy watching the chefs run the pass. We’d advise making a bee-line for the chicken Milanese served in a bun, with slow roasted tomatoes and spicy mayonnaise.

Ozone Coffee Roasters, Bethnal Green

Coffee nerds and renowned brunch buffs Ozone are back, expanding from their original site in Shoreditch to Bethnal Green. Must-try signature dishes served at the buzzing East London location include kedgeree with poached egg, fried shallots, labneh and chimichurri; and sweet pancakes with syrup stone fruits, caramelised labneh, popped rice and sorrel. The interior is warehouse-y with some predictable East End trendiness thrown in.

Darjeeling Express, Covent Garden

Keep your eyes peeled for internationally-acclaimed Asma Khan’s latest opening. Sticking to similar tenets from her original Darjeeling Express, this new opening in Covent Garden will have a top front of house and kitchen, and employ an all-female team of untrained cooks to whip up authentic Persian-influenced Mughlai dishes. Expect a massive buzz – when we last saw her, she had people sidling up to her for her autograph. Highlights include a halwa channa puri; a chilli cheese toastie; a masala omelette and stuffed paratha.

Barboun, Shoreditch

Glitzy Barboun on Shoreditch’s Great Eastern Street has re-opened with a Levantine weekend brunch, courtesy of head chef Fez Ozalgan. Chill out in the rattan chairs among the leafy olive trees and banquettes, and tuck into opulent weekend favourites like eggs Levantine: poached eggs and pastirma (eastern style charcuterie) towering on English muffins and doused with hollandaise; or Flat iron steak with fried eggs and charred ezme. Expect to find gym whippets looking for post work-out refuels among the clientele, as well as local East London fashionistas.

26 Grains, Covent Garden

Watch the mellow hum of shoppers wander through Neal’s Yard as you enjoy a brunch at the recently reopened 26 Grains. Chef and owner Alex Hely Hutchinson makes sure there’s an army of grain-focussed bowls on the menu, while seasonal variations on her signature porridge include a spiced apple puree, butter, hazelnuts and brown sugar special. Savoury repasts include thyme and sage sautéed mushrooms on sourdough wedges – topped off with mustard crème fraîche and parmesan, they’re a filling choice. Meanwhile, dairy fiends should sample the scrambled eggs, crispy onions and ogleshield cheese on top of local neighbour St John's brioche buns.

Jikoni, Marylebone

Chef Ravinder Bhogal’s new cookbook is selling like hotcakes – as is her newly launched weekend brunch menu at Jikoni in Marylebone. Flavours are sparky, with combos like tamarind glazed bacon and fenugreek waffles, while he veggie must-try has to be the sweetcorn pancakes, spiced creamy corn and fried eggs; or the sweet potato bhel, apple and pomegranate. As thrilling as the menu is, the interior is soothing, with pretty ceramics and East African chitenge prints throughout.
