The Best Restaurants For Fish & Chips In London

The Best Restaurants For Fish & Chips In London

It’s Friday – so what better time to venture out to one of London’s best chippies? From authentic old-school experiences to newcomers adding a touch of finesse to traditional fish and chips, here are the spots to try across the capital.

Hook, Camden

Hook started life as a simple market stall in Dublin in 2011, where the team made a name for itself with its ‘new-school’ take on fish and chips. Today, its Camden restaurant is a popular spot. Everything is made on site, from dipping sauces to the seaweed salt that adorns its chips. Fresh cod and haddock comes coated in panko breadcrumbs, while those after something a little different can order fish tacos or the ‘Dirty Fish Burger’ – cod or haddock in panko breadcrumbs with rocket, wakame pickles, garlic truffle sauce, chipotle mayo, hot sauce and homemade seaweed salted chips.

Poppie’s, Camden & Spitalfields

Poppie’s is renowned for its authentic fish and chips – and it’s little wonder, with born and bred East End proprietor, Pat ‘Pop’ Newland, at the helm. Pop’s career in the fish and chip business started in 1952 when, aged 11, he got a job on Roman Road cutting up copies of the Daily Mirror to wrap fish and chips in. Today, Poppie’s is also defined by its in-house fishmonger, Salih, who prepares all the fish on site and continues to command the fleet in the engine room below its Soho shop. Kids can get in on the action via the £6.50 children’s menu, which includes cod bites, sausage or fishcake, all served with chips, while adults should opt for the traditional haddock and chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce.

The Chipping Forecast, Notting Hill

Notting Hill’s The Chipping Forecast buys from suppliers which use traditional, ecologically friendly, sustainable fishing methods. Provenance is very important to the business and the fish the kitchen serves can be traced back to the fishermen who caught it, their boat and where it was landed. Customers can select the likes of cod, hake, haddock and monkfish scampi, and can choose to have their fish beer battered, gluten-free beer battered, simply grilled or in panko breadcrumbs, fried in either beef dripping or rapeseed oil. Guests can also opt for St Austell Bay mussels steamed in BrewDog Punk IPA, garlic, cream and parsley; grilled Cornish sardines; and Cornish crab on toast.

Kerbisher & Malt, Brook Green

Kerbisher & Malt was established in the west London suburb of Brook Green by chef Saul Reuben and his brother-in-law Nick Crossley in 2011. The aim, then and now, was to make fish and chips the way the pair thought they should be – using fresh fish from sustainable sources, served with homemade salads, great beers and coffees in environmentally friendly packaging and in a nice place to sit down. The number one rule? No soggy chips. The team peels and cuts the potatoes themselves and fries them twice at different temperatures, giving the chips a crunchy exterior and fluffy, well-flavoured interior. The kitchen also makes its own sauces (apart from the ketchup, which is strictly Heinz), batters and mushy peas and have even brewed its own beer, Kerbisher Pale Ale.

Golden Union, Soho

Golden Union is a quintessential British chippy, serving fresh fish and homemade pies to the people of Soho since 2008. Owners Billy and Kerry formerly owned The Endurance pub for many years and know Soho like the back of their hands. The team believes in keeping it simple and staying true to the roots of the chippy – no frills, fresh food and fast friendly service. Expect feather-light batter and homemade chips made with potatoes sourced from the Fenlands of East Anglia, plus the team’s well-loved homemade fishcakes and pies. New for this month, the team has launched a ‘Comeback Special’ menu, packed with various deals and combos.

Sutton & Sons, Various Locations

Fluffy, authentic 'chip-shop' chips, Mrs Sutton's homemade pickles and cakes, and local ales brewed in Hackney – there are lots of reasons locals love Sutton & Sons, which has chippies in Stoke Newington, Hackney and Islington. Whether you eat in or take away, Sutton & Sons offers a friendly and relaxed dining experience. Best of all, the team knows its fish – they’ve been sourcing the freshest catches for almost 20 years. The family-run restaurants offer traditional fish and chips alongside a changing menu of grilled and seafood options – we’d go for the smoked haddock and cod fish cakes or tempura king prawns.

Oliver’s, Belsize Park

In the last ten years, Oliver’s has gained a reputation for high-quality fish and crisp chips, alongside its wide range of Mediterranean dishes. The restaurant was founded by Mario Budwig out of the desire to bring a fresh, fun yet traditional chippie experience to Belsize Park. All the restaurant’s fish is fried in vegetable oil with the latest frying technology ensuring they serve the healthiest fish and chips possible. The venue only serves white fish such as cod, haddock, plaice and sea bass as well as salmon and tuna, and doesn’t sell shellfish. We’d opt for the traditional haddock, which comes coated in matzo meal.

Fish!, Borough

Established in 1999, Fish! claims to be the first restaurant of its kind in London. The concept is simple: providing customers with the best quality fish, cooked in front of you, in simple and classic ways. Its location in Borough Market means the kitchen has access to some of the UK’s best produce and fish is delivered daily from the restaurant’s very own fishmonger, Jarvis, which is renowned for its extensive range of the freshest fish and seafood. For something extra-special, we suggest trying the beer battered wild halibut, served with chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce.
