The Conscious Edit: July

In The Conscious Edit, we bring you the very best brands, products and initiatives from the world of sustainable fashion. Whether it’s a new label or an eco-friendly venture from someone we love, these are the conscious products, services and launches to know about this month…

The Brand

Derived from the Arabic word for timeless, new ethical brand Abadia is committed to preserving culture, supporting craftmanship and creating consciously-made pieces with the help of the area’s artisan community. With a signature aesthetic that juxtaposes femininity with masculine structure, the brand’s voluminous dresses, skirts and tops are each designed to last for generations to come thanks to classic silhouettes and quality manufacturing.

The Swim Collection

If you’re looking for something a little more unique this summer, Ayla Swim’s clashing colours, bold prints and feminine details more than fit the bill. The brand has long been a champion of sustainable practices and its latest ‘Jardinia’ collection, with prints inspired by the English countryside, is made using Repreve Nylon – a fabric that uses 100% recycled materials and saves the equivalent of six million gallons of gasoline each year.

The Pop Up

Fashion rental platform By Rotation has launched its first ever pop-up store in Westfield London, giving shoppers the opportunity to browse and rent brands like The Vampire’s Wife, Rixo and Ganni for as little as £3 per day. Not content with just renting fashion, the store also offers a selection of furniture and homewares from Studio Arva, and plans to host a series of masterclasses on leading a more sustainable, stylish lifestyle. The events schedule can be found on Westfield London’s website – expect to see tablescaping, flower arranging and more on the agenda.

The Jewellery

Brazilian designer Carolina de Barros creates genuinely sustainable pieces that don’t compromise on quality or style. From hammered gold rings to irregularly shaped pendant necklaces, all her pieces are made using 100% recycled silver, with the gemstones either ethically sourced or reclaimed, and any scrap metal melted down and reused to minimise waste.

The Shopping Platform

If the thought of trawling through resale sites puts you off the idea of vintage shopping, Circle of Style could be the answer. A brand-new platform, the site will quiz you on your likes and dislikes, before assigning you a stylist to handpick a selection of pre-loved gems on a monthly basis. After delivery, you have seven days to try everything on and only pay for what you want to keep, along with the small monthly subscription fee of £2.99. Consider this your shortcut to more unique, sustainable style, but with minimal effort.

The Bags

Based in Sydney, accessories label The Hold creates ornamental bags which are perfect for evenings and weddings, described by the brand as ‘pieces of art‘. Each bag is made by artisans in northern India, and The Hold also donates $10 from every purchase to an organisation working to enhance the lives and education of the artisans’ children in Uttar Pradesh.
