How To Wear The Scrunchie Trend

Sex and the City devotees will remember Carrie’s big falling-out with boyfriend Berger over the divisive hairpiece: “No woman who works at W magazine … would be caught dead at a hip downtown restaurant wearing a scrunchie.” Once the reserve of twinset wearing, East Coast mums Stateside, and the accessory of choice for school girls back here in Blighty, scrunchies have long been cast aside in the fashion world…

Until now, that is. Streetwear brands have catapulted the look back into the mainstream (hello, Balenciaga offerings at £150 a pop), changing the status of the scrunchie from school essential to fashion must-have.

From Ashish to Westwood to Marc Jacobs, in recent years the look has been toted down the runway by a legacy of brands, casting its old school aspersions aside and making it a worthwhile trend purchase. Not sure how to wear the look? Here are our rules…

1. Don’t Take It Too Seriously

There’s no point teaming your scrunchie with crisp shirting and tailored trousers – you’ll only look like you missed the memo on updating the style for 2018. Instead, try it off-duty with this season’s crop of bright colours and fun, floaty pieces.

2. Go Hard Or Go Home

This is a look to be embraced – for a trend-led take, it has to be bold patterns, bow-adorned styles and oversized designs. We love ditsy Liberty print offerings for a kitsch take.

3. Clash With Your Outfit

Anything too matchy-matchy will make the look feel twee, so instead go for effortless vibes in jarring colours – extra points for metallics or sequins.

4. Keep Your Hair Messy

Scrunchies lend themselves to a relaxed, off-duty aesthetic, so ditch perfectly polished tresses and instead team with messy pony tails, half-up-half-down ‘dos and beach-side buns.

5. Make It Girly

If in doubt, capitalise on the ultra-feminine designs out there, and use the scrunchie to add a girly touch to your look. Bow-detailed styles can soften a leather biker, while pink designs will put a pretty spin on an all-black look.
