10 Books To Read Before They Hit The Screen

If you’ve already finished the TV version of David Nicholls' ‘One Day’, you might be pleased to know there are plenty more adaptations due for release this year. From Bridget Jones to NightBitch, now’s your chance to read the books before they find their way to the big – or small – screen…

It Ends With Us, £4.99 | Colleen Hoover

When it was released back in 2016, Colleen Hoover’s It Ends With Us was an overnight bestseller. It therefore makes sense that Hollywood big hitter, Blake Lively, has been tasked with playing the much beloved Lily Bloom with Justin Baldoni (Jane The Virgin) playing opposite her as Ryle Kincaid. For those who may have missed it, the novel examines the various cycles of abuse we find ourselves in, parenthood and second chances in love.

Lady In The Lake, £12.95 | Laura Lippman

After its 2019 release, Apple TV+ quickly snapped up this noir thriller, adapting it into a limited series for the streaming platform. Staying true to the book’s narrative, Natalie Portman stars as a housewife-turned-investigative reporter who ditches her picket-fence life to solve an unsolved murder. During the investigation, she collides with Cleo Sherwood (Emmy-nominated Moses Ingram), a mother navigating the political turbulence of 1960s Baltimore and struggling to put food on the table. While the series is already available, with new episodes dropping weekly, there is still time to catch up on the original source material.

Mr Loverman, £10.69 | Bernardine Evaristo

Girl, Woman, Other was one of the biggest books of 2019, but Bernadine Evaristo has plenty of other novels worth checking out. One of her earlier works, Mr Loverman, has been picked up by the BBC for a new limited series set to release later this year. The novel revolves around the secret life and internal conflict of an elderly gay Caribbean immigrant to London. The cast is flushed out with much-loved actors, as well as emerging stars, such as Lennie James, Ariyon Bakare, Tahj Miles, Tamara Lawrance, Holly Cattle and Jessica Murrain.

NightBitch, £10.27 | Rachel Yoder

NightBitch is a cool, female-focused take on the metamorphosis story. An artist who takes a career break to be a stay-at-home mum finds herself taking canine form when night comes. Set to release at the end of this year, this surreal film about maternal instincts and suppressed female rage has been picked up by director Marielle Heller (Diary of a Teenage Girl, Can You Ever Forgive me?) and Hollywood's Amy Adams is set to star.

The Electric State, £21.73 | Simon Stalenhag

Graphic novel, The Electric State, has become a cult classic in the sci-fi world. The book, known for its wistful illustrations and melancholic prose, documents the odyssey of a runaway teenager and her small yellow robot, who traverse a strange American landscape in search of her missing brother. The cinematic nature of the  imagery lends itself perfectly to the big screen, and the Russo brothers – who have directed a large portion of the Marvel films – are set to direct the new film. Milly Bobby Brown is starring, alongside Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci, Anthony Mackie, Billy Bob Thornton and Brian Cox.

The Lives Of Lee Miller, £10.95 | Anthony Penrose

American photographer and photojournalist, Lee Miller, carved her career in a typically male-dominated field during a turbulent time for women and the wider world. Penned by her son, The Lives Of Lee Miller tells the story of the exceptionally talented woman who, when World War II broke out, applied her expertise as a fashion and fine art photographer to document pivotal points in history such as the London blitz, the liberation of Paris, and the concentration camps of Buchenwald and Dachau. Great care was taken in the making of the adaptation – the filming process took more than eight years – but it's set to be one of the most exciting biographical films of 2024. The cast includes Kate Winslett as Lee Miller, as well as Marion Cotillard, Andy Sandberg, Josh O’Connor and Alexander Skarsgård.

The Outrun, £10.28 | Amy Liptrot

Based on the memoir of Scottish journalist and author, Amy Liptrot, The Outrun tells the story of a young woman returning to her childhood home to rehabilitate after an addiction-fuelled, unhappy ten years living in London. Combining self-reflection and nostalgia, with aching descriptions of the islands’ wild nature, geology and wildlife, it is part nature writing, part recovery memoir. The rugged and beautiful landscape described in the book lends itself to some striking cinematography and, going by the film’s trailer, viewers can expect exactly that – as well as a moving performance from Academy Award nominee, Saoirse Ronan. Set to be released in September, the film also stars Pappa Essiedu, Stephen Dillane and Lauren Lyle.

Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, £19.96 | Helen Fielding

Bridget Jones is a national treasure. Luckily for us, there’s a fourth instalment in the works based on Helen Fielding's Mad About The Boy, which was released back in 2013. This time, Renée Zellweger, Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant will all reprise their roles, with the new addition of One Day heartthrob Leo Woodall. Set to be released on Valentine's Day next year, it’s unclear how much of the new film will be based on the book, but we’re sure Bridget will be back with the same wit and relatable insight into modern dating and womanhood.
