A Cool Girl’s Guide To Amsterdam

Juti Kongaunruan – @Wear.Juti.Eats on Instagram – is a fashion and foodie obsessive. So, after her recent trip to Amsterdam, we had to ask her for her recommendations. Here’s what to do, where to eat and where to shop on your next visit…

EAT

Amsterdam has such a good foodie scene that we were spoilt for choice. A standout was De Tros – anywhere that does a smash burger as a starter has my heart. It’s a small, intimate dinner spot with big flavours, and the wine list was great. We had the mussels, the burger, entrecôte, bitterballen – a Dutch-style meat-filled croquette – and finished with the brioche perdu (French toast). Save room for dessert because that dish was insane.

Fou Fow Ramen was the perfect place to warm up after a rainy walk – but expect a queue. I recommend putting your name down and then exploring the nearby streets. It's worth the wait – the gyoza was incredible and the ramen portions were very generous.

We had to try Winkel43’s famous apple pie, which also causes lines to form around the block. My top tip is to check if the queue is just for inside seating. Because we wanted to sit outside, there was no waiting required. Of course, the apple pie with cream is a must-order and I can confirm it's worth the hype.

For brunch,  Staring At Jacob was our favourite. You have to get the All Around Carnivore – I still think about that sausage to this day. Elsewhere, Box Social Jordaan is in a great central location for breakfast before you explore the canals and museums nearby.

Coffee lovers, take note: Luuk’s is a must-visit. It’s in a triangle of great spots alongside Winkel43 and Bun Bun, and its coffee is superb. And don’t even think about leaving Amsterdam without trying Saint-Jean Bakery – the cruffins are legendary, but I picked up a pistachio croissant and it has not left my mind.

SHOP

I prefer vintage shopping when I’m abroad. First on my list this trip was UME Studio – it’s a super aesthetic store with a great collection; all the pieces are sourced from influencers and content creators. Then there’s  AVC and Gimme Gimme Vintage, which has an incredible curation of designer pieces.

Amsterdam is one of those cities where you can dip in and out of different shops, especially in De Negen Straatjes. The neighbourhood has nine of the prettiest streets in the city, all of which are connected by bridges over the canals, and there are more than 250 boutiques. It’s full of designer stores, art galleries, vintage shops and famous food spots for a quick refuel – like Fabel Friet and Chun Cafe.

IJ-Hallen is Europe’s biggest flea market that happens one weekend a month. I recommend booking your trip around these dates. It’s a mix of indoor and outdoor stores, and some cult-like online vintage stores, such as Ronnies Vintage, also have stalls there. You can get really good deals – I bought a mega fur jacket for less than £80.

Albert Cuyp is also a famous market with over 250 stalls selling food, flowers, clothes, accessories and fabrics. It’s in De Pijp, which is probably my favourite neighbourhood. It has a real bohemian feel to it and there’s always loads going on.

DO

The best and fastest way to get around the city is by bike. But seeing as I haven’t been on a bike in seven years, I felt that walking was my safest bet. We averaged 20k steps daily, so I’d advise bringing comfy trainers.

Amsterdam is known for its inner-city green spaces like RembrandtparkWesterpark and Vondelpark The latter even has an open-air theatre and great food and drink spots. Proeflokaal 't Blauwe Theehuis is really popular.

My favourite museum is the Moco Museum. It’s more modern and has pieces by Banksy, Tracey Emin, Andy Warhol and Basquiat. Otherwise, if it's your first time, hit up all the classics like Rembrandt’s HouseDam Square and the Anne Frank house.

Finally, you must head to Booth Club Amsterdam – it’s what you see all over Instagram. Snap a vintage photo strip to remember your trip. It's cheap and fun and makes for a great keepsake.
