Here’s Why You Should Be Checking Your Chest

Think breast cancer isn’t something that could affect you? That’s the misconception CoppaFeel! wants to change. Breast cancer can happen to anyone, regardless of age, gender or background. Here’s why checking your chest should be part of your monthly self-care routine…

Find Out Your Normal

When was the last time you checked your chest? Actually got to know what’s normal for you? If the answer is never, you’re definitely not alone. You may think breast cancer is something that only affects older generations – something your mum, auntie or nan needs to think about. In fact, CoppaFeel!’s research found that young people not being aware that breast cancer is relevant to them is one of the biggest barriers to regular chest checking. But breast cancer can happen to anybody. That’s why CoppaFeel! is on a mission to make chest checking feel less intimidating and like a normal part of looking after yourself. And no, you don’t need to become a health obsessive. Once a month is all it takes to know what’s normal for you.

So, What Exactly Are You Checking For?

There’s no such thing as a ‘normal’ chest. Everyone’s boobs, pecs or chest looks and feels different, and things can naturally change over time – particularly if you have periods. The point of checking isn’t to panic over every tiny difference but to become familiar with your own body so you’re more likely to notice something that feels unusual for you.

CoppaFeel! recommends looking and feeling your chest, including your armpits, nipples and the area up towards your collarbones. You can do it wherever feels comfortable – in the shower, lying in bed or in front of the mirror. There’s no one ‘right’ way to check.

Signs of breast cancer may include:

  • Skin changes such as puckering or dimpling
  • Unusual lumps and thickening
  • A rash or crusting on or around your nipple
  • A sudden, unusual change in size or shape
  • Unusual lump or swelling in your armpit, or around your collarbone
  • Liquid coming from your nipple
  • Nipple is pulled inwards or changes direction
  • Constant, unusual pain in your breast or pec, or armpit

Noticed something unusual? Don’t Google yourself into a spiral. CoppaFeel! recommends speaking to your GP if you notice a new or unusual change. Some changes are natural and harmless, but getting it checked is always the sensible move.

Make It Part Of Your Monthly Reset

Think of it as another five-minute check-in with yourself, alongside washing your make-up brushes, changing your bedsheets or finally booking that dentist appointment you’ve been putting off.

Pop a monthly reminder in your phone and get to know what your chest normally looks and feels like. The more familiar you are with your own body, the easier it can be to noctice any changes.

And if you know you’re going to forget? Fair. That’s where CoppaFeel! comes in. Text COPPACHECK to 82228 to sign up for their free monthly text reminder service. You’ll get a text each month prompting you to check your chest, so there’s one less thing to remember. Because knowing your normal is about knowing your body well enough to notice when something changes.

The Takeaway

Breast cancer can affect anyone, which is why getting into the habit of checking your chest matters. Every month check your chest. Know your normal.
