HOME OF SHAKESPEARE

Henry V (From November)

With the most extensive collection of Shakespeare plays available to stream in one place, you can fall in love with the classics again and again. You may even see a familiar face or two like Game of Thrones star Kit Harington in the Donmar Warehouse’s sell-out production of Henry V. Shakespeare’s ever relevant play is a thrilling study of nationalism, war and the psychology of power.  Donmar’s associate director Max Webster explores what it means to be English and our relationship to Europe, asking: do we ever get the leaders we really deserve?

Richard II

Starring Dr Who’s David Tennant as the meek but mighty king, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Shakespeare’s Richard II has been hailed as the “definitive production of a great play”. Watch as Tennant masterfully captures the downfall of the plotting King Richard II, live on stage from Stratford-upon-Avon, the home of William Shakespeare. Didn’t quite catch what one of the characters said? Don’t be afraid to pause, rewind, turn up the volume, and savour every word with simple-to-use subtitles. You don’t get that at the theatre.

SENSATIONAL STORIES

Like Water For Chocolate

Writer Laura Esquivel’s modern Mexican tale of passionate and forbidden love comes to life with The Royal Ballet. Artistic associate Christopher Wheeldon (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland) captures the layered richness of Esquivel’s incredible family saga, Like Water for Chocolate. Royal Ballet principals Francesca Hayward and Marcelino Sambé shine as the star-crossed Tita and Pedro, and composer Joby Talbot’s original score springs to life in the hands of Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra. Full of dramatic energy and magical storytelling this production is a dazzling new contemporary classic.

The Cellist

One for all non-fiction fans, choreographer Cathy Marston’s moving work, The Cellist, is a piece that will leave you feeling inspired. Based on the moving true story of cello superstar Jacqueline du Pré, whose career was cut short by her multiple sclerosis diagnosis, in this story, du Pré’s beloved cello, personified by the dashing Marcelino Sambé, is the loyal and loving life partner every woman deserves.

The Dante Project (From November)

BALLET

Sleeping Beauty

Christian Spuck (Romeo and Juliet, Messa da Requiem, The Nutcracker) presents a fresh and captivating take on this beloved ballet. The adaptation follows the journey of sheltered Aurora, beautifully portrayed by Michelle Willems, as she courageously breaks free from expectations and steps into her own. Supported by a brilliantly costumed cast of androgynous fairies, thanks to costume designer Buki Shiff, Spuck turns the spotlight on the fate of Carabosse (William Moore) blurring the line between good and evil. This production is full of quick wit, magical designs and Spuck’s unique choreography. Accompanied by Philharmonia Zurich, Tchaikovsky’s melodies provide the perfect backdrop to this mesmerizing production.

Akram Khan's Giselle

In 2018, Akram Khan – the renowned contemporary choreographer – took the greatest of all romantic ballets and put his own stamp on this story of love, betrayal and redemption. Hailed as a modern masterpiece, this stunning new version by the English National Ballet includes sets and costumes by designer Tim Yip and an adaptation of Adolphe Adam's original score created by composer Vincenzo Lamagna.
