My Pregnancy Style Rules: Patricia O’Dwyer

Pregnancy doesn’t have to mean sacrificing your personal style, and no one knows this better than fashion influencer and now mother of two, Patricia O'Dwyer. An expert at mixing affordable and high-end fashion, we asked her to share her tips for looking your best while pregnant.

Know what you feel good in. The first time I was pregnant I gravitated towards leggings and jumpers as I felt it was easiest but ultimately, it resulted in me feeling like I'd lost my sense of style. I love colour, print and fun outfits, so I’ve made these looks work with bigger sizes over the last nine months. 

Buy normal jeans and just size up. I love a good pair of jeans but can't really get on with maternity cuts. I bought a pair of wide-leg H&M jeans three sizes larger, and they lasted me up to the 30-week mark. It felt so good to have a go-to staple in my wardrobe.

Don’t feel restricted to the maternity section. I really didn't want to invest in pieces that only last a matter of months and overall, I don't find maternity clothes hugely inspiring. Anything can be sized up to work with the bump, as well as post baby.

If you find something that makes you feel good – maybe a particular style of dress – then don't be afraid to re-wear it over and over.

Look for statement pieces. The most hard-working pieces in my wardrobe have been statement jackets and waistcoats – they’re the perfect go-to when I need to elevate a simple look. Life is made easier when you have a small selection of pieces that you feel comfortable in but can wear in different ways.

Show off your bump. It can feel like the obvious move to gravitate towards loose-fitting pieces but a lot of the time, the more flattering options are the more fitted. If you feel this isn't as comfortable, then layering pieces like a blazer or oversized shirt on top works well. 

I don't find maternity clothes hugely inspiring – anything can be sized up to work with the bump.

Focus on the accessorises. Like a statement jacket, accessories are great for adding a point of difference and elevating even the simplest of outfits. Great jewellery or a good bag make such a difference too. 

Invest in comfort as much as style. It can be easy to focus on the more 'glam' options when you want to feel your best, but it’s just as important to invest in comfortable pieces. A good sweat set or pyjamas will feel amazing on the days when you just want to look after yourself.

Rent for big events. With a summer baby this time, I had lots of weddings and events to plan for, but I was reluctant to spend lots of money on something I would end up wearing once. I know renting can be daunting but some of the platforms now have concessions where you can try pieces on before committing, which is so helpful.

Hold onto the things that make you feel good. For me, the one thing that always makes me feel put together is having my nails done, so I prioritised this throughout the pregnancy and it always made me feel polished. If it's a blow dry or a massage or making time for your favourite yoga class, try to hold onto the things that make you feel your best.

Repeat, repeat and repeat again. If you find something that makes you feel good (maybe a particular style of dress) then don't be afraid to re-wear it over and over. You can easily swap out the accessories to make things feel fresh but ultimately, you will look best in what you feel best in.
