The Smart Way To Do A Family Summer Holiday

Family holidays often come with compromise – either they’re built around the kids or a chance for adults to unwind. Peligoni, tucked away on Zakynthos’ unspoilt northern coast, offers something for everyone. It’s not a resort, not a hotel and not your standard villa rental. Instead, it blends independent accommodation with a private beach club atmosphere, expert childcare and just enough structure to make everything feel effortless. Here's why it's become a word-of-mouth favourite for in-the-know travellers…

The Set-Up

What makes Peligoni different is how carefully it's been designed to feel personal, flexible and low-key luxurious. Rather than a sprawling resort, guests stay in a collection of handpicked villas, cottages and hilltop homes scattered along the coastline. Each is within reach of The Club – a laidback but lively hub that comes with your weekly membership. This is where days unfold – lounging by the pool, enjoying lunch with a sea view or joining a fitness class before having an iced coffee at the bar. You can do as much or as little as you like and that’s the beauty. Club membership gives you access to two restaurants, three bars, the spa, watersports, classes and kids’ activities – with everything designed to make summer feel easy, not over-planned.

The Accommodation

Whether you're after a rustic stone cottage shaded by olive trees or a design-led villa with infinity views, there's a property to suit your holiday style. Each home is unique but well-equipped, with outdoor dining spaces, private terraces, pools or plunge pools and a home-from-home feel. Families can spread out, do breakfast in pyjamas and skip the hotel routine entirely. It’s this independence that transforms the experience. No morning rush to the buffet, no trying to time naps around cleaners and no sharing your downtime with strangers in the corridor. When you want to rejoin the fun, an evening shuttle service gets you to The Club and back again for sundowners, dinners or events – no designated driver required.

The Vibe

Peligoni draws a mix of families, multigenerational groups and friends, many of whom return year after year. It’s polished but never pretentious, and the balance of privacy and connection is just right. Your days can be as high-energy or horizontal as you choose. Some guests are paddleboarding at sunrise, others are easing into the day with a swim and a coffee. Long lunches blur into afternoons by the pool, while evenings often revolve around golden-hour cocktails and dinner under the stars.

The Family-First Facilities

This is where Peligoni outshines traditional family options. The crèche — available from four months — runs from two locations, with one on-site at The Club and one located at the brand’s deli, just a short drive along the coast. There’s a play-led approach centred on outdoor time, music and creative sessions. Older children can dip into a structured watersports programme that runs throughout the week, building real confidence on the water.

Beyond watersports, Peligoni partners with London-based movement specialists TARKA during May and October half term, as well as throughout July and August, offering daily sessions focused on coordination, teamwork and independence. Teenagers — often the hardest group to please — tend to settle quickly. There’s enough structure to keep them engaged, but plenty of freedom to move between The Club, the water and the villa at their own pace. During peak weeks, Learn From A Pro masterclasses add another layer, with one-off sessions led by names such as Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington and Pineapple Dance Studios.

What makes it work is that not everything is split by age. Shared experiences — evening courtyard feasts, family boat trips to Shipwreck Beach and motorised watersports sessions — bring everyone back together, giving the week a natural flow that feels active, social and easy, rather than over-programmed.

While the kids are busy being entertained, parents can enjoy some ‘me time’, Peligoni style. That might mean lounging on the decks and indulging in a long lunch, or it might mean making the most of all that’s included in Club memberships, from daily yoga classes and guided bike rides around the island to tennis tuition with fellow guests.

The Food

Food at Peligoni is fresh, sociable and totally unfussy. The Club's main eatery, Tasi, serves long, sun-drenched lunches of grilled octopus, Greek salads and burrata-topped flatbreads. There are wood-fired pizzas for younger guests and excellent cocktails for adults who want to linger. Courtyard Nights are a highlight – communal long-table feasts under fairy lights with live music, local produce and a real sense of celebration. If you prefer a quieter evening, you can dine back at your villa or pick up ready-to-go mezze, wine and hampers from the deli.

The Type Of Family It Suits

Peligoni is best suited to families who prefer flexibility over fixed schedules and are happy without all-inclusive convenience. It works particularly well for children who enjoy the sea and group activities, and for parents who value space, autonomy and a holiday that runs at its own pace. There’s no high-octane entertainment or contained resort bubble here, and that’s intentional. Instead, the focus is on well-organised days, independent accommodation and a shared social hub you dip into as needed.

The Insider Tips

Time it right: July and August are the liveliest months, with a full schedule for kids and teens. June and September are quieter, with warm seas and fewer crowds – ideal for little ones or laidback travel. May and October half terms are also great times for families looking to go out of season.

Hire a car: It’s essential and makes everything easier. Villas are spread out and having your own wheels gives you total freedom.

Track your Peli Card: Everything at The Club is cashless and charged to your card. It keeps things seamless but it’s worth keeping an eye on your balance, especially if you’re booking extra activities.

Book watersports early: In peak weeks, these slots fill up fast. For kids who want to do as much as possible, a full watersports pass is worth it.

Use Petit Peligoni: A lifesaver for parents travelling with babies or toddlers – you can pre-order bath kits, cots, play items and more.

Plan a one off-experience: Most families stay happily within the Peligoni bubble but a boat day to Shipwreck Beach or a sunset sail is a real highlight.

The Bottom Line

What sets Peligoni apart from the usual two-pool, five-restaurant resort ecosystem is its blend of structure and freedom. There’s enough planned so that no one feels at a loose end but nothing so rigid that you feel like you’re on holiday with an itinerary. If your children love the sea and you prefer open space to organised entertainment, Peligoni is a game-changer. It’s for parents who want to feel like grown-ups again, teens who crave independence and younger kids who want fun that doesn’t feel forced. It’s a holiday that works for everyone – without ever feeling like a compromise.
