A flood of new information around food intolerances and allergies has prompted an explosion in the dairy-free milk market in recent years, leaving us spoilt for choice. But even a quick scan of the supermarket shelves proves not all alternative milks make for a straight-forward swap. Here, we’ve rounded up some of our favourites and how to use them…

Alpro Unsweetened Almond Milk

Made from roasted almonds, this milk's delicate taste makes it the perfect match for a variety of different drinks, plus it’s a great source of calcium and Vitamins B2, B12 & D - an antioxidant which helps protect cells from oxidative stress. It's 100% plant-based, as well as being sugar-free and low in fat.

The closest thing to skimmed milk, this rice drink is made from a simple blend of fine rice and water. A refreshing alternative to dairy, it has zero added sugar and is lactose-free, too.

Made with coconut cream, Himalayan salt, brown rice, cashew and nutritional yeast, this complex blend of one-ingredient plant milks aims to get as close to the white stuff as possible.

Oatly Oat Milk

Thanks to its ‘ambient’ packaging, you can store this milk alternative at room temperature. A great go-to product for just about everything, it’s also perfectly balanced, with a healthy dose of protein, carbs, fibre and good fat.

Koko Original Coconut Milk

This milk is deliciously fresh and light in taste with only a subtle hint of natural coconut. As a milk alternative, with added calcium and vitamins D2 and B12, it’s also free from lactose, soya, gluten, and nuts.

Plenish Soya Milk

Plenish Soya Milk is made from just two natural ingredients - organic soya (sustainably-sourced from the South of France) and water. It's naturally high in plant-based protein, too, and low in saturated fat, with 90% less sugar and 40% fewer calories than semi-skimmed milk.
