What are some of the key denim trends for the upcoming season?
Bootcuts are back! I really didn’t think I would be saying that. Traditionally, people have shied away from these styles as they’re not sure how to wear them. Instead, they stick with straight legs or skinny jeans but the recent Valentino X Levi’s collab with the reinvented 517 bootcut has demonstrated just how great they can look. Flares are such a fun evening look – just make sure they’re high waisted whatever the wash. Also, relaxed, baggier cuts – slouchier, oversized denim is an easy way to nail the effortless look. It’s a great alternative if you can’t face switching out your sweatpants. They’re not only for casual days, either –pair them with a tee and a pair of heels and you’re ready for a night out.
Which washes should every woman have in her autumn/winter wardrobe?
Darker denim is making a comeback once again, with inky blues and charcoals dominating many of the collections – not only is this wash super flattering, it’s also a great alternative to a trouser. Charcoal washes are a lot easier to wear than a harsh black, which sometimes loses that denim look. Inky or mid blue tones are great way to wear a classic denim look but still feel dressed up – a lighter stonewash makes that a bit harder.
Is distressing still big for A/W21?
Distressing is still around this season, albeit slightly differently to how we were wearing it in the spring and summer. For A/W21 it’s a lot grungier, washes are more authentic, more worn in, and there are charcoal washes in the mix, too.
Which lengths feel the most current?
For years, cropped or ankle length jeans have been the fashion girl’s go-to, but this season it’s all about full length – the longer the better! A great day to night style, it works with multiple cuts – from Levi’s 501s to bootcuts. Just make sure it works for whatever footwear you might have in mind – giving this some attention ensures a more polished look, and it’s a great way to smarten up an outfit.
What about the leg shape?
Straight legs are here to stay, and full-length straight legs are not only versatile – they should be a staple in your wardrobe. Denim is also getting a bit more fun this season – think ankle details, like slits and vents, for something a bit different.
Do you think low-rise denim will ever make a comeback?
Never say never! With more relaxed fits and cuts coming through, the oversized look lends itself to being worn slightly lower on the hip. People like Hailey Bieber and her stylist Maeve Reilly have both been spotted wearing lower-rise denim, but I can’t see it making a major comeback... we can probably leave that in the noughties.
If you could buy just one pair of jeans this season, what style would that be and why?
Probably a full length bootcut with an ankle slit detail – I usually default to a straight leg, so I’m trying to have a bit more fun. This style elongates your legs, plus it’s a fun way to show off your shoes whether they be flats or heels. We’re working on developing a reworked vintage collection at Pin Denim with a few details, like ankle slits, ready for party season.
