How To Perfect A Smokey Eye

A smokey eye is guaranteed to amp up your make-up during the festive period, but it can go wrong if you don’t know what you’re doing. Despite what you might think, you don’t have to rely on black and grey, either – you can choose colours which suit you, as long as you have the right technique down. Here are some extra tips, courtesy of SL Beauty Insider Adeola Gboyega, to take your smokey eye to the next level and achieve the ultimate sultry look.

Opt For Cream Shadow Saviours

Where a powdered eyeshadow requires a lot of blending and skill to apply, a cream eyeshadow is a great and long-lasting option. The creamy texture allows for effortless application, and you don’t need to use a primer. Instead, the cream shadow works as a base and an eyeshadow all in one. You can use your fingers or a brush to apply it directly to the eyelid. Start at lash line and blend up to the socket until you get your desired effect.

Line & Define

To intensify your smokey eye, make sure you line your eyes with plenty of eyeliner. The intensity of the smokey eye should be at the lash line, so this is where you should apply the darkest colours. This keeps the look more modern, and it’s the most flattering technique to suit all eye shapes.

You can use a gel or a Kohl eye liner, but a gel liner is best if you want something that won’t transfer – it can also be used in the waterline and is longer lasting. Apply the liner, then use a small brush to buff it out for a smokier effect, working quickly so the gel liner doesn’t set. You can add even more depth by gently buffing a dark black or brown powder shadow over the liner, as this will also help to fix the liner in place. A final tip – get right into the roots of the lashes, so there are no gaps showing, for a professional finish.

Blend With Brushes

Having the right brushes is essential if you want to nail a smokey eye. But you only need three maximum, to achieve the best results. A dense, flat shading brush to apply the eye shadow, a tapered fluffy brush to blend it out and finally, a small definer brush to help with detailed application at the lash line. Believe me when I say these three brushes will do all the hard work for you.

Move Your Mascara

When it comes time to apply mascara, you want to go for the type of blacker-than black formulas which promise full, thick and bold lashes. This will help to further frame the eyes and complete the smokey look. For the best results, go for volumizing formulas and use a zig-zag application technique. Look down into a handheld mirror and tilt your head back slightly, so that you can see your lash line properly. Push the mascara wand into the roots of the lashes and move the wand in a zig-zag motion. This will help you capture every single lash.

Add A Little Sparkle

Finally, if you want to add a little extra dimension to your smokey eye, pop on a sparkly eyeshadow. Choose a formula that glides effortlessly onto the eye with just the swipe of a finger to instantly take your look from day to night. Also, go for formulas which don’t contain big chunks of glitter for a more refined look.
