5 Rules For Wearing Colour

When it comes to colour, few wear it quite as well as stylish sisters Olivia & Alice. Now, the influencer duo have teamed up with French Connection to create an exclusive edit of the high-street brand’s new spring/summer collection – which is full of bright shades and bold hues. Here, we asked them to share some colour-wearing tips, as well as their favourite pieces from the range…

1. More Is More

“We find wearing colour a very instinctive thing. Trust us – it’s actually easier to wear head-to-toe colour in a muted palette than it is to add a bold bag or pair of shoes to an otherwise monochrome outfit. We love pairing unexpected colours together – red and lilac, orange and lilac, green and pink, very pale yellow and lilac… but the trend is definitely moving towards wearing three shades together at the moment – lilac, green and pink is a current favourite of ours.”

2. Turn To The High Street

“Of course, we were drawn to the new French Connection edit because of the bold colours. The first thing we noticed was the bright green suit – we love that shade – and this colour is so on trend right now. We love the bright pink with the yellow details, and really liked the effect of pairing the dress and knitwear in those shades together, too. The pieces are so easy to wear and will look so good as we transition into summer. If we had to pick one piece from the collection everyone should have, it would have to be one of the pink or purple dresses in the flower print, because they fit so well. Everything is such beautiful quality.”

3. Just Start Dabbling

“Women are scared of colour because they don’t want to stand out. Instead, they like to play it safe, and don’t want to invite comment. But introducing the odd piece can make you feel happier. People always stop us on the street and say how much our clothes cheer them up. If in doubt, try pink first. Any shade works – you can tone it down by going for pastels or you can go bold in a brighter hue. If you’re nervous, then go for the former – it’s not too in your face. A baby blue is great, too – wear it with denim and it won’t feel too extreme.”

4. Add One Thing

“It’s easy to throw on a bright dress in the summer, but you can actually incorporate colour into your wardrobe year-round. A suit is great for this – colourful, oversized blazers can go always be thrown over the top of something more neutral – and they’re chic, because the tailoring balances out the colour. A bright coat is also a good way to dip your toe into the trend – even if you are wearing something simple, a brightly coloured trench will do the trick. As for shoes? Go white – we’re wearing white loafers with everything right now. When it comes to bags, people tend to think they should always go for a neutral for maximum wear, but we find colourful styles usually go with so much more. If that’s a little much for you, at least go for white over black.”

5. Invest In One Or Two Great Pieces

“Pairing colours together is the way we build any outfit, so when it came to styling the French Connection pieces, we looked at which shades complimented each other. Because there are two of us, we can come up with a few interpretations of the same piece. We may have styled all the French Connection pieces with other bright shades but, equally, they would each fit so well into a capsule style wardrobe, too. If you want to refresh your wardrobe for spring/summer, it’s where you’ll find those couple of pieces that are really easy to mix and match.”
