Everything You Need To Know About The Met Gala 2023

The Met Gala is fashion’s big night out and this year, the industry turned out in force to celebrate the legacy of one of its most famous names – Karl Lagerfeld. The exhibition 'Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty' honours the late designer who previously helmed Chanel, Chloe, Fendi and Patou. From Kim Kardashian decked out in head-to-toe pearls to Dua Lipa in one of the most talked about dresses on social media – and impressive debuts from the likes of Camila Morrone – here are some of the standout looks…

Kate & Lila Moss

Wearing: Fendi Couture

Co-ordinating in Fendi couture gowns, the pair were accompanied by Kim Jones on the red carpet. Lila opted for a soft yet voluminous marabou feather look in a pretty peach hue, while Kate opted for one of her style signatures – a nude lace slip dress – topped with a delicate, sheer silk cape. Both referenced Karl’s love for femininity.

Camila Morrone

Wearing: Rodarte

The Daisy Jones & The Six star stunned in a black velvet Rodarte gown. The silhouette of the long train was balanced by a pretty, oversized, white lace collar and we love that she kept the hair and make-up natural.

Miranda Kerr

Wearing: Dior

Opting for classic structured Dior with a corset bodice and a full skirt and train, Miranda's dress was fully embellished with tiny pearls and crystals which created an ombré effect. A simple updo kept things soft, while the diamond choker and deep red lip added a bit of glamour.

Daisy Edgar-Jones

Wearing: Gucci

One of the many stars who opted for a monochrome colour palette – a fitting ode to Karl Lagerfeld – this look managed not to feel boring thanks to the intricate bow detailing and flower appliqué.

Dua Lipa

Wearing: Chanel 1992

Trend forecasters predicted someone would wear this iconic Chanel number for the Gala – previously donned by Claudia Schiffer in the 90s – but it was only fitting that it was worn by co-chair Dua Lipa. The singer arrived on the Met steps also wearing Tiffany & Co.’s new Legendary diamond necklace – a 100-carat, D-coloured white stone set on the label’s Lucida Star necklace.

Naomi Campbell

Wearing: Chanel 2010

Draped in a molten pink dress from Chanel's spring/summer 2010 couture collection, this flowing silky number was contrasted with a cool, silver metal bodice – and heels to match. The Met veteran completed her look with over $6 million-worth of jewels from Jacob & Co.

Wes Gordon & Adut Akech

Wearing: Carolina Herrera

Now a firm-fixture, this year’s Met theme was a big one for the Adut who, thanks to Karl Lagerfeld, was the second Black model in history to be cast as the bride in a Chanel Haute Couture show. Accompanied by Carolina Herrera creative director Wes Gordon, her tiered tulle monochromatic gown gave the look volume, while the sleek bodice kept things chic.

Irina Shayk

Wearing: Yohji Yamamoto

Dressed in a vintage Yohji Yamamoto dress from 1988, the piece featured twisted silk fabric and a simple slip-dress silhouette, with bridal nods. Most surprising was her footwear – a ballet flat instead of a heel. While it’s not an obvious choice, it perfectly complemented the feminine look.

Margot Robbie

Wearing: Chanel spring 1993

Naturally, as a Chanel ambassador, Margot wore vintage Chanel Haute Couture. This featured a flattering sweetheart necklace and asymmetric sash – classic but current, thanks to its see-through, panelled corset bodice. The look was subtly accessorised with simple drop earrings and rings.

Emily Ratajkowski

Wearing: Tory Burch

Thanks to a plunging neckline and flowing train, Emily Ratajkowski maintains her spot as a best-dressed front runner during this red-carpet season. Accessorised with a lightly feathered clutch, glitzy jewellery and a hair bow, the look nodded to Audrey Hepburn – bangs and all.

Liu Wen

Wearing: Tory Burch

Another Tory Burch look, Liu’s gown struck the perfect balance between drama and sophistication. The black bodice and off-the-shoulder neckline transforms into a voluminous, structural piece, complete with beautifully constructed flowers and a tulle underlay.

Gisele Bündchen

Wearing: Chanel 2007

After taking a hiatus from the red carpet, the supermodel fittingly made her return in archival Chanel. Interestingly, Gisele wore this look back in 2007 – only this time, it was paired with a larger-than life feathered cape which brought some serious drama to the Met steps.

Sienna Miller

Wearing: Gucci

Feathered, plunging and bold – it shouldn't work, but Sienna’s daring Gucci number is seriously impressive. Channelling a flapper-style, the backless piece was accessorised with both a diamond headpiece and earrings, complemented by a slick-back bun.

Lea Michele

Wearing: Michael Kors

It was a case of all-over metallics for Lea Michele as she made her first appearance at the Met in nine years in a slinky silver sequined dress. The open back and long sleeve detail kept the look cool and modern, while her sleek bob with a soft fringe felt feminine and sweet.

Kerry Washington

Wearing: Michael Kors

Kerry Washington stunned in this unique, black lace two-piece. The peplum hem and bra top delivered all the necessary drama while the tailored black blazer slung over her shoulders added a cool elegance. A subtle old Hollywood wave through her pinned up hair and a smoky eye added extra polish and sophistication.

Mindy Kaling

Wearing: Jonathan Simkhai

Mindy Kaling was a vision in Jonathan Simkhai. The flowing column skirt was contrasted with a structured corset peplum which draped into a long dramatic train. Her slicked back hair and flawless make-up kept the look on the right side of contemporary.

Kylie Jenner

Wearing: Jean Paul Gaultier

One of the most show-stopping looks of the night, Kylie Jenner’s red asymmetrical dress, complete with thigh high slit, was pure glamour. Her long train draped down the carpeted steps of the Met, while her two-tone shawl was thrown casually over her shoulders. Her simple hair and make-up kept the look modern and youthful.

MATT BARON/SHUTTERSTOCK

Kim Kardashian

Wearing: Schiaparelli

It was a case of more is more for Kim Kardashian who gave a big nod to Karl Lagerfeld’s penchant for pearls. She added more drama with a diamond and pearl choker, pearl sandals and a huge cream train. Her signature bronzy make-up and easy updo completed the look.

MATT BARON/SHUTTERSTOCK

Lily Aldridge

Wearing: Oscar de La Renta

Model Lily kept things chic in a stunning off-the-shoulder Oscar de La Renta dress and a simple diamond necklace by Bucherer. The statement bow detail gave it a modern update and her slicked back hair and fresh make-up felt feminine and effortless.

Imman Hamman

Wearing: Standing Ground

Moroccan Egyptain model Imaan Hammam ensured all eyes were on her in a long sleeve, floor length white dress with subtle fringed detailing at the waist. She opted for a lesser known Irish label, Standing Ground, which gave her a fashion forward edge, while her glamorous hair and make-up added drama to the simple silhouette.

Vittoria Ceretti

Wearing: Balenciaga

Simple but stunning, Vittoria’s column dress by Balenciaga added just the right amount of drama. Her long black gloves provided a touch of Hollywood glamour and her slicked hair and delicately winged eye make-up added extra polish.
