Jessie Bush Shares Her Secrets For Great Personal Style

Jessie Bush is an East London-based, New Zealand-born content creator whose discerning taste and impeccable style have made her one of the most recognisable faces in fashion. Colour has always been her forte but, as a new mum, the way she dresses has shifted since she first burst onto the scene. These are her secrets to great personal style…

Don’t Be Too Strict

Having a baby definitely throws a spanner in the works! Pre-baby, I lived in oversized dresses, but when your body changes, your style adapts. Fashion is there to have fun with, so wear what makes you happy. I have a few staples I always fall back on – my favourite pair of jeans, for example – but I’m also guided by the weather and where I am in the world. I can wear the same jeans and white tank all week but feel just as ‘me’ in a voluminous pink dress – and that’s okay.

Stop Caring What Other People Think

I’ve always been confident in how I dress, but living in London is also extremely freeing. There will always be someone cooler, more colourful and generally more ‘out there’ than you on any given day. I lived in Sydney for a few years, where everyone dresses immaculately – think chic dresses with heels and perfectly done hair. Unfortunately, I’m not an immaculate person, so I do feel more confident here, where I can be my more chaotic self!

Living in London is EXTREMELY FREEING. There will always be someone COOLER, MORE COLOURFUL AND GENERALLY MORE ‘OUT THERE’ than you on any given day.

Give Yourself A Serotonin Boost

I feel ‘cooler’ when I dress in neutrals, but I get a real serotonin boost when I wear colour. A big fluffy jumper in fun hues or a sunny yellow dress is sometimes exactly what I need. I don’t think I play favourites – any colour goes – but I do love green. I wear red if I’m dressing up and I can work with almost any shade of blue – it’s practically a neutral to me now.

Opt For A Matching Set

I have a navy and cream printed trouser and shirt set from Aussie label Sir which I’ve already worn to death, as well as a red and white printed trouser and short shirt set from another Aussie brand Matteau. There’s something about a co-ordinated look that feels very put together, but it’s also comfortable and so easy to throw on – basically chic pyjamas and an effortless way to play with bold prints and colour.

Know Your Brands

Ibiza-based De La Vali does great printed dresses – the cuts are unbelievably flattering. You don’t always think of Totême as a brand for prints, but I have a few of its printed silk trousers, and they always make me feel chic. Another favourite is Acne Studios. Often more suited to winter, Acne has that minimal vibe but still manages to play with a lot of colours. The prints are so cool.

Jessie’s Recent Buys:

As a millennial, I love a good ‘going out’ top with jeans. I’d pair this Christopher Esber one with blue denim or a tailored pair of tan trousers.

I recently bought these Raey jeans – they’re super oversized and I’ve been wearing them non-stop. Even though I’m only 5’3, I’m partial to an oversized silhouette.

Silver jewellery is making a comeback. For years, it was tricky to find anything that felt cool but these heart earrings are the perfect finishing touch.

Don’t Fixate On The Accessories

Since becoming a mum, accessories have kind of fallen by the wayside. It turns out you don’t need an expensive bag when you have a pram! Plus, kids tend to pull on jewellery and it’s too risky to wear in new shoes. Instead, I just live in my Chanel ‘dad’ sandals – a worthy investment.

Stay Inspired

Instagram is a great source. For me, Lucy Williams always wears colour and print in such an effortlessly cool way – as does Blanca Miro. Pernille Rosenkilde has the best wardrobe and Monikh is always ahead of the curve when it comes to spotting trends – her new collab with Faithfull is so good.

Remember Fashion Isn’t That Serious

If you want to start having a bit more fun, save a few pieces on Instagram or Pinterest you think look cool on other people. If it looks cool on them, it’ll probably look cool on you – just make it your own. Then, go somewhere like Depop or Vinted to find those pieces second-hand. Otherwise, I love renting when I’m not sure if I really want or need to own something. It’s such an easy way to experiment without too much financial commitment.

Think About How You Want To Feel

When I’m getting dressed, I ask myself a few questions. Does it make me feel confident? Do I feel comfortable? Does it need tailoring? Finally, will I feel overdressed? This is a particular fear of mine – I never want to be the most overdressed person in the room. Luckily, in the fashion world, that’s rarely the case.

Save a few pieces on Instagram or Pinterest you think LOOK COOL ON OTHER PEOPLE. If it looks cool on them, it’ll probably look cool on you – just MAKE IT YOUR OWN.

Balance Masculine With Feminine

As a short, blonde woman, I often feel too ‘cute’ when I wear anything overly feminine. Don’t get me wrong, I love colours like pink and lots of feminine prints, but I make sure I style them with a loafer or black boots to toughen things up.

Buy Into The Trends That Align With Your Personal Style

Over time, it’s become easier to decide which trends make sense for me. Taking photos of my outfits for a living does help me understand my personal style. I can look back at photos from a week, a month or year ago and ask myself, “What was I thinking?” Sometimes, though, I look back and still love the look and want to rewear it. Either way, you tend to learn something about yourself.
