What’s New In Fashion For 2022

From Daniel Lee stepping down to Balenciaga joining forces with The Simpsons, 2021 was a big year for fashion – so here’s hoping 2022 rivals it. From top designer collabs to the return of a creative director we love, here are the new launches, appointments and collections to have on your fashion radar this year.

Chanel Appoints A New CEO 

The past couple of years has seen some big changes at Chanel – first, the death of its creative director Karl Lagerfeld (and the subsequent appointment of successor Virginie Viard) and in December 2021, the fashion house announced it would appoint a new CEO: Leena Nair. Nair, a former HR chief at consumer goods giant Unilever, will oversee the brand’s 2022 strategy. Chanel still doesn’t sell its pieces online and prices are fast approaching that of Hermès, which suggests the house will attempt to become even more exclusive this year. If you’ve had your eye on something, we suggest acting fast.

Rixo Launches Sustainable Denim 

British label Rixo is due to release a selection of pieces this month made from sustainable denim. The collection, which includes everything from 70s-inspired dresses to collared jackets, uses 80% less water and 60% less hazardous chemicals than traditional denim, while the factory the brand has partnered with saves 40 tonnes of waste monthly through reusing different offcuts. The collection has also been rated ‘low’ against the Environmental Impact Measurement scoring system, so you can be sure each piece is genuinely kind to the planet.

The Return Of Phoebe Philo

Phoebe Philo set fans into a spin mid-way through last year with the announcement that the ex-Céline creative director would launch her own eponymous label, with the launch of the new brand undoubtedly due to be one of the biggest fashion events of the year. While little is known about when the brand will launch exactly, one thing’s for sure – the industry will be glad to see the return of Philo’s timeless, unique approach. Until then, Philo-files should follow Instagram account @OldCeline for hint of what’s to come.

Levi’s 501s Go Eco-Friendly

Levi’s iconic 501 design is high up on many people’s list of favourite jeans, but the denim production process is widely recognised as one of the hardest on the environmental. This year, Levi’s plans to launch a new version of the 501 Original, this time made with organic cotton and post-consumer recycled denim. The jeans are designed to be completely recyclable too, giving customers the chance to shop a little more sustainably.

Prada X Adidas 

Luxury and sportswear have merged once again with the latest partnership from Prada and Adidas. As has come to be expected, sustainability is a primary focus for the collaboration, which features lots of Prada’s signature Re-Nylon fabric made from recycled ocean waste. The collection also includes a reimagined design of Adidas Original’s well-loved Forum shoe, as well as a crossbody bag complete with Prada’s signature utility pockets and the iconic three stripe motif.

Vestiaire Launches UK Base 

While the vintage and second-hand market continues to grow (a survey in December 2021 found that a third of UK fashion buyers planned to buy or bought secondhand pieces over the festive period), the knock-on effect of Brexit made sourcing pre-loved designer fashion increasingly expensive and shipping times considerably longer. To solve the problem, global resale platform Vestiaire collective has just launched a UK logistics and distribution centre, where it will also carry out its all-important authentication service. The result should mean fewer Brexit-related price hikes and surprise import charges.
