Why Tie-Dye Is Back For Summer 2019
Once the staple of flower-crown-wearing, Woodstock-goers, tie-dye is unexpectedly back under the fashion spotlight for SS19. Forget bold primary shades and psychedelic patterns, however – the new generation of tie dye features washed out, muted colours and a cacophony of pink shades; think of it as the evolution of the ubiquitous pastels trend.
Put on the map by Stella, Prada and Chloé, the good news for grown-ups is that the look is no longer reserved for t-shirts; instead, feminine silhouettes including slip dresses and skirts have received the treatment. Brands are also taking cues from Proenza Schouler, a long-time tie-dye champion, whose washed denim is a surprisingly wearable nod to the trend.
So why the resurgence? Harper’s Bazaar credits its uniqueness. ‘No two pieces are ever the same. In the '60s and '70s when tie-dye was pervasive, it became a symbol of individuality and creative expression through handmade, rustic versions’. These 20th century roots may also be responsible; with many of SS19’s trends taking cues from days of yore (think prairie dresses, fringing, bold shoulders and acid-wash denim), it’s no surprise that this fun, youthful look is back on the agenda. We can also thank the rise of the effortless trend – nothing says Cali cool like a could-be-DIY item thrown on with a casual pair of jeans.

Be Careful With Proportions
Get your tie-dye too tight, you’ll look like a singer in a 90’s girl band. Too loose, you’re one step away from a pair of wellies and an anorak. Go ever so slightly oversized with your styling to ensure you look like you know what you’re doing.
Pair With Denim
If in doubt, jeans are the easiest way to make tie-dye work. If it’s a dress, add a denim jacket – if it’s a top, add boyfriend jeans and heels. White denim also works – Lucy Williams provides endless style inspo for the look.
Save For Summer
Tie-dye isn’t a winter-friendly look, so we suggest saving it for warmer months and holidays. It works particularly well beach-side – a simple mottle print dress will earn you easy style points.
