Style Rules: Mette Sorrig

We’re always on the hunt for Instagram fashion stars with something fresh to offer. Scandi mother-of-two Mette Sorrig is just that and more – her look is chic, colourful and nothing short of an inspiration. We sat down with her to find out more…

My number one style rule is to feel comfortable. For me, styling is something fun, and I love to try out new things and ideas.

My style is based on vintage and second-hand finds. It's been my starting point ever since I was a teenager. I love to find things at markets when I travel or in Denmark during the summer – we have a lot of second-hand markets around Copenhagen. But I would say effortless, Nordic style is my ultimate inspiration.

An open back dress is number one on my summer wish list. I love the Cecilie Bahnsen dresses and the whole universe she has created. I’m also after more hats, funky sunglasses, Bermuda shorts, colourful suits and puff shoulders.

Right now, my day to day uniform is flip flops and loose, floral garments. During winter, I'm a bit more low-key, but during summer, I live my most colourful life. At the moment, I’m very much into oversized cuts, like a blazer and a white t-shirt with a skirt or pants.

Never say never, but I’m unlikely to wear heels higher than 10cm – I just can’t walk in them. Anything up to 8.5cm is in my comfort zone – an item needs to have some kind of comfort for me to wear it.

My favourite piece in my wardrobe is my green quilted kimono coat. It is very fragile with a few holes, but I love it and wear it with jeans or other colourful garments. It really lights up a room. My Rolex Daytona watch in gold and steel is my biggest investment, but it was worth it... such a beautiful piece. I saved for years to buy it.

When it comes to colours, they’re always based on my mood. You can combine a whole range of colours and patterns as long as the pieces balance out in the end – it’s a really fine line whether it works or not, but I try out plenty of things to see what does.

If I could swap wardrobes with anyone it would have to be Emili Sindlev. She has fabulous style and an amazing wardrobe. Her colour combinations are the best, and she has a grown-up aesthetic that I love. Pernille Teisbæk has always been my go-to for years and is the one who inspired me to start my own Instagram. She is such a sweet person.

I love everything Isabel Marant touches. I want everything she makes. To work with her would be a dream.

My favourite outfit is one of my oversized men’s suits with a white shirt. I recently styled it with a tie and mules – I loved that look. Because I am generally very feminine, I think it adds something really interesting to throw in some menswear, but to mix it with very feminine pieces, like a lace shirt. It’s all about the balance.

The secret to good style is being able to combine items so it fits your figure and body. Pieces don't have to be expensive to be cool. Do your own thing – in the end that will be what defines you.
