H&M

Scandi retailer H&M launched its first seasonal beauty collection back in 2015 with the intention of giving its customers a 360° shopping experience. Within the current line-up, you can find massage tools, silky hair curlers and a foundation available in 40 shades. Unpretentious and varied, most of the pieces cost less than £15. The highlight? EST.1947 – a vegan, eight-piece fragrance collection that pays homage to the brand’s heritage. The scents are elegant, and the packaging wouldn’t look out of place next to pricier bottles on your dressing table.

M&S

British high-street stalwart M&S stocks a great roster of beauty brands – and that includes its own. Interspersed on the shelves with Aveda, Votary, Pixi, Colour Wow and others, Apothecary is an affordable, wellness-oriented bodycare line housed in smart, minimalist packaging. Then there’s skincare line Fresh Elements, which only launched last year, but has already won over shoppers with its stripped-back approach. And for airy, non-committal fragrances that won’t break the bank, try Discover’s Cool Vetiver and Sea Salt & Neroli.

Zara

Spanish fashion giant Zara entered the beauty space in 2021 and impressed editors with its wearable shades and high-performance formulas. Since then, it has continued to draft in the experts to shape its line-up of make-up, fragrance and haircare. The fragrances crafted by Jo Malone don’t disappoint and its latest addition – a playfully packaged ten-piece hair collection – is well worth a look if you’re tired of your usual drugstore rotation.

& Other Stories

The make-up offering at & Other Stories isn’t overly ambitious, which actually serves it well. Swerving hard-to-nail base products, it instead focuses on the holy trinity: eyes, cheeks and lips. Shimmery cream eyeshadow pots, illuminator sticks and flattering lipsticks housed in weighty metal casing all come in under £20. A word of warning – the brand often switches it up, so if you do find something that suits you perfectly, consider stocking up.

ARKET

It’s hard to believe that ARKET has only been around since 2017, considering how its boxy silhouettes and clean Nordic lines have infiltrated our wardrobes. The brand’s bodycare range is more under the radar, but every product earns its spot. Inspired by Nordic flora, the scents are sophisticated and uplifting. Oakmoss, neroli, geranium and verbena are the headliners, available in hand soap, cream, body wash and fragrance oil formats.
