The Gel

Self-Tanning Instant Gel, £24 | Clarins

This is a great entry point for tan novices. Lightweight and fresh, the gel texture sinks in quickly and over a few hours, develops into flattering, sunkissed warmth. We also love that it feels more hydrating than other traditional tan formulas – which run the risk of leaving your skin feeling stripped – thanks to soothing aloe vera and fig extract.

The Mousse

Tanning Mousse, £25 | Caribé

Specifically designed with melanin-rich skin tones in mind, this doesn’t disappoint. With a whipped, soufflé texture, it’s easy to apply and melts in seamlessly without leaving behind any streaks. It quickly evens out skin tone for a unified, even glow that looks healthy and smooth. Choose between ‘Deep’ and ‘Medium’ – using the brand’s shade selector to help you get it right.

The Serum

Luxe Body Serum, £19.99 (was £35) | St.Tropez

Full of skin-friendly niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5, this St.Tropez serum is such a good faff-free option as there’s no need to rinse. Simply sweep over your skin using a mitt and let the bronzy depth develop over the course of eight hours. Apply after your morning shower and you’ll be good to go in time for your evening plans. A word of warning – there’s no guide colour, so be careful not to miss any spots.

The Spray

Ambre Solaire Natural Bronzer Quick Drying Body Self Tan Mist, £8.38 (was £12.50) | Garnier

Fans of Garnier’s Summer Body Lotion will love this aerosol mist. Just like the cream, it delivers a believable, gradual glow that’s never intimidating or OTT. Just a light layer may be enough but as it starts developing after just an hour, you can decide whether to keep going for extra intensity. We love the added vitamin E and apricot oil – great for sensitive skin.

The Foam

Self Tan Foam Medium, £18 (was £24) | Bare By Vogue

Bare by Vogue has really impressed us – this foam develops into rich, realistic-looking warmth but there are three shades available so you can choose your intensity. As for the formula, it’s full of peptides, goji berry, grapefruit, all of which work together to boost moisture and elasticity. We love that this dries down fast too, so you can put your clothes back on without any stickiness.

The Drops

The Body Illuminating Tan Drops, £44 | Tan-Luxe

Offering a tailor-made result, you can use as many – or as little – of these Tan-Luxe drops as you like to get a low-maintenance colour that goes the distance. Full of vitamin E, aloe vera and raspberry seed oil, they’re incredibly hydrating too, giving skin that natural, glowy sheen long before the colour builds.  Mix with your go-to body lotion for the best results.

The Mist

Sunblush Hydrating Tan Mist, £39 | Self Glow By James Read

It’s hard to believe tanning pioneer James Read only launched Self Glow a couple of years ago – the formulas are highly sophisticated and full of kind-to-skin ingredients. The entire line-up is excellent but we’re currently hooked on the mist. When you spritz it, it comes out really fine, giving you even coverage with no need to rub it in. For targeted warmth on smaller areas like the face, décolletage and arms – this is your new best friend.
