Scents Of Spring
Catch Me If I Fall EDP, £185 | La Pyae Apothecary
Eucalyptus 20, £170 | Le Labo
'Oh Honey' Candle, £85 | Flammes
Spring always feels like a sensory awakening for me and it’s when I start craving a new scent in my collection. One I have discovered is by friend and fellow beauty editor Kathleen Baird-Murray’s fragrance brand La Pyae Apothecary. Inspired by Kathleen’s maternal homeland of Myanmar, Catch Me If I Fall EDP has been created in collaboration with perfumer Frank Voelkl (the nose behind Le Labo’s Santal 33 and Glossier You, no less) and it is an instant favourite. While notes of bergamot, green leaves and neroli give it an initial vibrancy, it also has a creamy warmth courtesy of sandalwood and white musk and an enduring earthiness from ambrette and iris. Although I have worn this almost exclusively since I got it, special mention must go to a new Le Labo triumph (yes, another one), Eucalyptus 20. Distinctive and slightly dirty, this is herbal, green and glorious, but is softened with leathery notes of labdanum, musk and frankincense. Finally, I’ve enjoyed scenting my space with a new brand called Flammes, which kindly sent me their Oh Honey candle. It’s inspired by my birth flower (honeysuckle for Aries season) and is fragranced with notes of ylang-ylang, geranium and oak moss. I love it almost as much as the quirkily illustrated ceramic jars.
Sparkling Skin, Please
Power Infusing Serum, £90 | ShiseidoHyaluronic Acid Immerse Serum, £100 | Alastin SkincarePrecious Gold Vitality Mask, £284 | Clé de Peau Beauté
I don’t want a complexion that looks like it’s been in hibernation all winter and so radiance is the name of my spring skin game. Two excellent serum finds for injecting some much-needed luminosity include Shiseido’s Ultimune Power Infusing Serum and Alastin’s HA Immerse Serum. The former is clinically proven to work on the seven signs of ageing (radiance, roughness, fine lines, skin tone evenness, face wrinkles, firmness and elasticity) and so far, so true. It’s still too early to tell but my skin has less of a crinkly appearance, especially upon waking, and is looking more glassy and less ghastly by the day. Better hydration is a big part of a better glow, which is exactly what Alastin’s HA Immerse Serum gives you. It uses a proprietary octapeptide-45 to give your skin’s own hyaluronic stocks a big boost as well as delivering a hefty dose upon application. Talking of glowing, I’m a recent convert to Clé de Peau Beauté’s Precious Gold Vitality Mask which is full of antioxidants and 24 karat gold and is designed to soften lines and plump. Caveat – this stuff is expensive but boy, does my skin love it. Every time I use it, I notice a more refined, polished texture.
Bring On The Body Care
Vitality Brightening Body Cleanser, £38 | Wildsmith Skin
Smooth & Soothe Retexturizing Body Pads, £49 | Murad
Beija Flor Elasti Body Oil, £52 | Sol De Janeiro
I start taking my body care more seriously once the weather turns, so I’ve been all systems go recently. For me, it starts in the shower with the very peppy Wildmsith’s Vitality Body Wash with notes of ginger, cedarwood and black pepper. Once I step out, it’s on with Murad Retexurizing Body Pads which contain AHAs and BHAs to smooth any bumpy bits and refine any dry patches. They make a change from an in-shower scrub, and I like how practical they are if you find you’ve missed a spot. To add a final flourish, I’ve been enjoying Sol de Janeiro’s Beija Flor Elasti-Body Oil. I douse myself in it whenever I want my skin to look lush and expensive and it does a great job of not only hydrating even super scaly areas, but leaving behind a glowing, glossy finish.
Hair SOS
Profiller+ Hair Growth Scalp Serum, £14.99 | John Frieda
The Multi Tasker, £195 | Hershesons
Ever since I decided to grow out my bob-length hair, I’ve been laser-focused on doing everything I can to optimise hair health. That means looking after my scalp which I’m doing with the help of John Frieda’s Pro Filler+ Scalp Serum. I used the shampoo and conditioner to help minimise postpartum hair loss in my last pregnancy and found it helped. This serum is notable in that it doesn’t just prevent hair loss but actively encourages hair growth too. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll have seen evidence of how obsessed I am with the Hershesons Multi-Tasker and in particular, the mermaid waver attachment. If you don’t, allow me to fill you in. The tool itself is a bright, joyous cobalt blue and comes with various curling heads. I’ve loved the mermaid waver ever since Luke (Hersheson) styled my hair with it because the waves it leaves behind are perfectly imperfect and the kind of nonchalant ones I try and fail to get with a regular curling wand. Using it couldn’t be easier either. Clamp, clamp, clamp and you’re done.
Renewed Glow
Soft Pinch Liquid Contour, £27 | Rare Beauty
Phyto-Rouge Velvet, £49 | Sisley-Paris
It’s rare that I veer away from blusher, but I’ve got into bronzer again, namely thanks to the Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Contour. I’ve been using the shade ‘Gentle’, a sort of dusty rose brown, which I suppose sits somewhere between a blusher and a bronzer. The creamy texture is unrivalled when it comes to blending, whether you use a brush or your fingers, which means the warmth it lends your face is so natural. Sisley’s Phyto-Rouge Velvet Lipstick in Rouge Flame is another great way to warm things up. I love how energising this fire engine red is against slightly wan, winter skin and it’s also a comfortable, lasts-all-day matte, which is important.
Brain Boosters
Extra Strong Energy Patches, £12 | Kind Patches
Brain Powder Nootropics Energizer, £35 | Willpowders
My face and body might be looking a bit more spring-ready but sometimes I need a little help getting my brain into action. A new discovery is Kind Patches, which came recommended by a friend and uses transdermal technology to deliver ingredients straight into your bloodstream (no pills necessary). I started using their Extra Strong Energy Patches which are loaded with B vitamins, caffeine and ginseng and noticed a difference in my energy levels instantly. Finally, because this knackered mum-of-three needs all the help she can get, I’ve been turning to Willpowders’ Brain Powders. I have been raving to anyone who will listen about the brilliance of this entire range (the electrolytes are excellent) but I think the concept of the Brain Powders is especially clever. The powder sachets contain nootropic ingredients like glucoronolactone and l-theanine and come in flavours like pina colada and mojito. They were created by founder Davinia Taylor to stand in for that end-of-day glass of wine you sometimes crave. As well as being a genuinely delicious alternative to the real thing, I have noticed they really do give me an energy boost and a bolt of mental clarity at precisely the time I usually start to flag.
