How To Nail The Cashmere Make-Up Trend
THE LOOK
“Cashmere make-up is all about balance – especially when it comes to tones and textures. You want your make-up to exude softness, the contrast should not be too high and the finish and textures should have a velvety feel. It translates differently depending on your skin tone but I’d define it as a muted, tonally neutral look that complements your complexion.” – Claudia Neacsu, make-up artist
“Think of it as the beauty equivalent of your favourite cashmere knit. It’s all about velvety, softly diffused skin, muted neutral tones and a beautiful blurring effect that makes everything look seamless. The skin has a soft-matte finish but it should still look like skin – never heavy or overly powdered. There’s a real sophistication to the look.” – Tobi Henney, make-up artist
THE APPEAL
“We’re moving away from overly sculpted make-up towards something that feels more timeless and wearable. People still want their skin to look beautiful and flawless, but they don’t necessarily want to see lots of product. Cashmere make-up gives you that polished, expensive-looking finish without it looking – or feeling – like you’re wearing a lot of make-up. It’s also incredibly versatile and works beautifully in real life, not just on camera.” – Tobi
HOW TO GET IT RIGHT
01 Build A Soft-Focus Base
“Nailing cashmere make-up is all about tonal and textural balance. Although the finish is more blurred and matte, we can still play with light and shadow in a way that ensures your skin won’t end up appearing flat. Also, blurriness is not equal to overly powdered or fully matte – I see it more as a soft-satin finish that complements your skin. Keep the layers thin and make sure you prep with the right products for your skin type, then you’re good to go.” – Claudia
“A beautiful base starts with plump, healthy-looking skin, so you want to hydrate first before applying foundation. Try a lightweight formula with a natural or soft-matte finish and apply it in thin layers, concentrating coverage only where it’s needed. I love using a sponge to work the foundation into the skin. Powder should be strategic rather than applied everywhere, focusing on the T-zone and areas where you tend to get shiny, while allowing a little natural dimension to remain on the cheeks. The goal is a blurred finish, not a completely flat, powdered complexion.” – Tobi
02 Lean Into Flattering Neutrals On The Eyes
“Fair skin works well with a neutral taupe that’s just a couple of shades darker than the skin tone. For medium skin tones, try a slightly bronzy shade that has a bit of warmth to it but not too much. On deeper skin tones, a maroon – warm, close to burgundy – complements the skin beautifully. I love the Armani Eye Tints which come in a variety of shades and textures. The matte shades have a blurred finish that blends seamlessly and they’re so easy to apply.” – Claudia
“Lean into soft taupes, chocolate browns, sandy beiges and muted cocoa shades. These colours create definition without looking too harsh and work beautifully across different skin tones when you choose the right undertone. For a really effortless look, wash a soft beige or taupe across the lid, then use a slightly deeper chocolate brown through the crease and along the lash line. I love keeping everything softly blended, with no harsh edges. A matte or satin finish tends to work best for that cashmere effect, although a tiny touch of soft sheen in the centre of the lid can be beautiful, too.” – Tobi
03 Keep The Colours Cohesive
“Choosing shades from the same tonal family helps the overall look feel harmonious. If you’re using cooler taupes on the eyes, consider a muted rose or pinky blush and a soft rose-brown lip. For warmer beige and caramel tones, lean towards peachy nude cheeks and a warm nude lip. The key is to create definition through subtle differences in tone and texture rather than having one feature compete with another. I love a softly sculpted cheek, a diffused eye and a lip that looks like a more polished version of your natural lip colour. Everything should feel blended and lived-in.” – Tobi
04 Balance The Textures
“I gravitate towards cream products that have a blurred finish when it comes to this look, almost like a mousse. The Prada Touch blushes are perfect for this look as they can be used on cheeks, lips and eyes and can be dabbed on using your fingertips. Then, you can’t beat Hourglass’ Ambient Lighting powders – the perfect finishing layer for a blurred effect. They’re also extremely lightweight and easy to blend.” – Claudia
“Cream products are fantastic for creating a seamless, skin-like base and adding subtle colour to the cheeks. They melt into the skin beautifully and give you that natural glow. You can then use powder selectively to set the base, soften the appearance of pores and create that velvety finish. A finely-milled powder is especially useful through the centre of the face. For blush, one technique I swear by is layering a cream underneath a similar-toned powder formula to make it last longer while keeping the finish soft and diffused. It’s really about using each formula to accentuate your best features.” – Tobi
05 Blur The Boundaries
“Take a clean fluffy brush and lightly buff over the edges of blush, bronzer and eyeshadow to remove any visible lines. For that soft-focus finish, press a small amount of powder into the areas where you want to blur texture, rather than sweeping it heavily across the entire face.” – Tobi
