Product Spotlight: Tula Skincare Glow + Get It Cooling & Brightening Eye Balm
The Story So Far
Steered by the latest research, doctor-driven skincare brands – think Dr. Barbara Sturm, Augustinus Bader and 111SKIN – combine cutting-edge ingredients with expert backing. And guess what? They’re hugely popular.
Niche brand Tula is led by gastroenterologist Dr Roshini Raj, who has spent her career studying the effects of probiotics. The company has been built on the principle that the body and skin can benefit from the same type of ingredients, so its products are powered by probiotic extracts and superfoods, with a simple goal: glowing, healthy skin. ‘Tula’ means ‘balance’ in Sanskrit, reflecting Roshini’s all-round approach.
The Hype
Having built a cult following in the US over the past decade, Tula only launched in the UK in 2022, but it’s taken off quickly. Much of the online buzz has been around Glow + Get It, a brightening eye treatment that has been doing the rounds on both Instagram and TikTok.
Eye cream is one of the most hotly contested topics among skincare professionals. Necessary or nonsense? Those prone to puffiness are almost always in the latter camp, and Tula’s version – thanks to the solid stick format and nature of its application – has earned rave reviews. At £26 for 10g, it also sits at a more accessible price point than more high-tech eye treatments, making it a good entry point for sceptics.
The Formula
The original Glow + Get It formula – there are now a few variations – is all about hydration, cooling and brightening. On the ingredient list you’ll notice fruit extracts, humectants (moisture-retentive substances like glycerin and hyaluronic acid that are responsible for that plump, dewy feel), caffeine and a vasoconstrictor which temporarily narrows the blood vessels to perk up tired eyes. Menthone glycerin acetal and menthyl lactate act as cooling agents, creating a fresh, wide-awake feeling that can make all the difference if you’ve missed out on your all-important eight hours. “I think the reason why people love it so much is the instant, pick-me-up effect,” explains Roshini. “It’s one of those products where, from the moment you apply it, you feel refreshed.”
Balmy, yet lightweight enough to layer comfortably under make-up, the texture is full of slip. This allows you to glide the stick around your eyes without any pulling – crucial, since the skin in this area is so much more delicate than the rest of the body. If hydration is your priority, go for the original. Otherwise there are two tinted versions, housed in pink and gold packaging, that give off a subtle rosy and champagne glow respectively – choose the one that aligns best with your natural undertones.
The Best Way To Use It
The balm is in a solid stick format. Unlike a traditional eye cream patted in using the ring finger, you can swipe it around the eye socket, manually applying some gentle, targeted pressure to alleviate puffiness. Focus underneath, but you can also use it to wake up sluggish skin close to the brow bone.
Gravity is just one of the many factors that can contribute to facial puffiness. Lying down for hours – as we do every night – can cause fluid to collect, and this could be exacerbated by your sleeping position. Tula’s Glow + Get It makes for a handy addition to your morning skincare routine, and you could even keep yours in the fridge overnight for that extra shot of cool.
According to Roshini, you can even use it throughout the day to reinvigorate your skin and ward off that dull, flat quality associated with dehydration. “I find it really useful on the go,” she says. “Because the application is so simple, the beauty of the eye balm is that it can be used anytime, anywhere.”
The Reviews
“This is very cooling and hydrating – great for those mornings when you’re a bit dehydrated or feel as though perhaps you’re not looking your best. Around the festive season it’s a staple in my routine. The shimmer helps deflect any discoloration and the cooling sensation is lovely and soothing. I have sensitive skin, but didn’t find this irritating at all.”
“My eyes are sensitive and I’m prone to migraines. I have to say, using this product in the morning helps me feel and look alive. It soothes my skin and while it may not solve my problem, the cooling effect actually alleviates some pain and tension when a migraine kicks in. I got more out of this product than I expected. Definitely recommend.”
“The formula feels lovely on your skin and it has a slight iridescence. I’ve definitely noticed my under-eyes looking brighter and feeling more hydrated. Make-up layers smoothly over the top and I have slightly crepey under-eyes and this doesn’t exaggerate the issue, which is amazing.”
“I keep this on my desk and use it to refresh my eye area if I’m feeling tired, especially when eye drops just aren’t cutting it. It feels really cold and hydrating, and makes me feel wide-awake.”
