7 Make-Up Brands For Sensitive Skin

Nearly three-quarters of people in the UK suffer with sensitive skin and while there are plenty of skincare businesses catering to the cause, there are fewer options when it comes to make-up. If you’re on the hunt for some gentler products, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite brands – from Jane Iredale to Physicians Formula.

@bareminerals

bareMinerals

Known for its mineral-based make-up, which has been made with sensitive skin types in mind, bareMinerals is recommended by dermatologists. Its gentle formulations are hypoallergenic and full of natural, nourishing ingredients that look after your skin. It was one of the first brands to create hybrid products, and you can expect any of the foundations, blushers or bronzers to feel lightweight and hydrating, yet they all offer rich pigments that really go the distance. We love the brand’s Liquid Concealers that give skin a natural-looking finish with coverage that’s never too heavy.

Jane Iredale

Jane Iredale was one of the first make-up brands to produce hypoallergenic formulas by using minerals within its make-up. Why? Because non-mineral products typically contain a long list of ingredients, including dyes, fragrances and often preservatives – all of which are known to cause irritation. Expect a host of tried-and-true formulas that apply beautifully and deliver rich pigments. Though the brand has existed for more than two decades, it continues to expand its ranges and pursue green, natural ingredients. We love its new HydroPure Tinted Serum which offers sheer coverage, impressive glow and a hefty dose of hydration.

@honest_beauty

Honest Beauty

A-lister Jessica Alba created Honest Beauty because she couldn’t find products she trusted for her own reactive skin. Wanting formulas that were safe and sustainable yet highly effective, she worked hard to ensure everything was free of synthetic ingredients known to cause irritation. Suitable for all skin types, but especially those with sensitivities, the line is well curated and full of carefully vetted and verified products that are universally tolerated. Hero products include the Tinted Lip Balm, Liquid Lipsticks and the Vitamin C Tinted Moisturiser – plus prices start from £7.50.

Physician’s Formula

Now 80 years old, Physicians Formula continues to innovate, with problem-solution make-up that covers, conceals and perfects skin, without any of the usual irritating ingredients. The brand was created by leading LA allergist Dr Crandall, who formulated the range for his wife who suffered from lupus and sensitivities. Every ingredient and formulation has been carefully considered and dermatologically tested to ensure everyone can use it with ease – it excludes 150+ known harsh ingredients from its products. There’s plenty to love in the range, including the Le Velvet Foundation and Mineral Glow Pearls Highlighter, but the Butter Bronzer is a standout. Silky and smooth, it’s the answer to sculpted yet naturally warm-looking skin. The hypoallergenic lipsticks are some of the best we’ve tried, too.

@rmsbeauty

RMS Beauty

RMS was founded by celebrity make-up artist Rose-Marie Swift. Alongside bold, bright and colourful make-up, its focus is better-for-your-skin formulations that are hypoallergenic. Often, the ingredients in natural cosmetics are refined, bleached, deodorised, heated or clarified – meaning they’re no longer ‘pure’. RMS, however, formulates its products using raw, food-grade and organic ingredients, leaving them all in their natural state to avoid irritating the skin. It also means they can better penetrate and rejuvenate the skin. Its ReDimension Hydra Powder Blush – a multi-dimensional, nourishing powder blush – is one of our favourite products from the brand, along with the Eyelights Cream Eyeshadow, the Luminiser Quad and its Tinted Daily Lip Balm.

Tarte Cosmetics

Cruelty free, mineral based and free from all fragrances, Tarte Cosmetics doesn’t include parabens in its formulas either, or any common irritants. Known for its Shape Tape range and Tartelette Palettes, it powers its high-performance formulations with nourishing fruit and plant extracts. There are plenty of vegan-friendly options available, too. We love the Amazonian Clay range, which includes several flattering blush and foundation shades. The latter provides great coverage and also keeps excess oil levels in check.

@tower28

Tower28

Tower28 founder Amy Liu was fed up of wearing make-up that further aggravated her sensitive skin. Struggling with eczema and frequent rashes, she set about formulating products that concealed the issue while still nourishing skin. That’s why Tower28 uses sustainable, natural ingredients proven to suit sensitive skin types. The line-up is small and concise – but what it lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality. Each product is vegan, free of irritants and any fragrance. We love the Lip Jellies, which provide the comfort of a balm but with the shine and pigment of a gloss. As for the bronzers and skin illuminators, they offer a believable glow with minimal fuss. Added ingredients like mango butter hydrate skin and keep the formulas sheer.
