The Power Of Good Blusher

While you want to use it sparingly, blusher is a make-up must-have when it comes to making your skin look alive and healthy. But with so many options on the market, how do you choose the right shade for your skin tone? SL Beauty Contributor Adeola Gboyega is here to help.

STEP ONE:
Choose The Right Blusher For Your Skin Tone

When you find the right blusher, it’s like finding that perfect little black dress. You can always rely on it to instantly make you look and feel better. The right colour will not only transform your complexion, but take years off your face, too. To help narrow the search, look at the natural colour of your lips and find a blusher shade that matches it perfectly. Also, look at your underlying skin tone (be it cool, natural or warm, pink or yellow) to help guide you in your choice.

Fair Skin Tones

If you have a fair skin tone, go for light shades with a cooler undertone – remember it’s always better to start off with a lighter shade and build it up gradually. A light peach or pink blush usually works well here.

Medium Skin Tones

For medium skin tones, opt for warm peachy shades or fresh rosier-toned blushers. The warmth in these shades will add a healthy radiance and glow to the skin that’s universally flattering.

Dark Skin Tones

Darker skin tones can pull of just about any colour, as long as the shade is rich in pigment and has a plenty of warmth to it. Choose bright blush colours that won’t wash you out, and make sure they have a warm undertone to them.

STEP TWO:
Get The Formula Right

Blush formulation is an important factor to consider, too, as not all blushers are created equal. It all depends on your skin type and preferences. For example, if you are oily and want a more matte finish, then go for a powder blusher that will last longer on your skin. Alternatively, if you have dry skin and prefer a dewy, soft look, then select a cream blush instead.

STEP THREE:
Nail The Application

As a final step, it’s important to apply blusher correctly – which often comes down to using the right brush. One with softer bristles will allow you to easily diffuse the colour on the cheeks. When you are ready to apply, smile so you can see the apple of the cheeks more clearly. Then, apply the blusher on the round part of your cheeks and blend upwards towards your hairline, ensuring there are no harsh lines or odd patches.
