Ty Coch

Wales

Set in 10 acres of coastal countryside, this former farm has been transformed into a nature-focused getaway for groups. Designed to accommodate up to 14 guests, bedrooms are arranged over three self-contained cottages (each with beds covered in Welsh woollen bedspreads) and within each cottage, there’s plenty of room for everyone to gather, such as an ocean-backed dining room. Next to a private shoreline, the cottages make a great base for families – there’s the opportunity to swim, go rockpooling and build dens – there’s even a wendy house on the hill. The farm is well placed between Snowdonia National Park and the Llyn Peninsula, meaning hill walks, kayaking and beach outings are within easy reach.

The West End On Harwarden Estate

Wales

The West End on the Hawarden Estate in Flintshire, North Wales, opened in January 2024. Hawarden is the ancestral seat of the Gladstone family, and The West End sits within the western wing of 19th-century Hawarden Castle, where the family still lives. The property, which sleeps up to 10, is above the Temple of Peace, PM William Gladstone’s private library. There are five huge bedrooms, four gorgeous doubles and one twin, and each has been expertly restored: the walls are boldly coloured and feature original pieces from artists such as Julian Opie, Damien Hirst, David Shrigley and Ai Weiwei. There’s a kitchen where guests can cook up feasts themselves or enjoy private dining experiences from the estate’s chef. The bathrooms have big roll-top baths and in the castle’s basement there’s a wood-fired sauna. In its own private woodland glade, there’s also an outdoor dining space with a wood-fired oven, Green Egg BBQ and hot tub.

The Cob At Venn Farm

Cornwall

Seeing the abstract paintings, Haeckels toiletries, Studio Herron wall hangings and pops of colour, it’s no surprise to learn the owners of this Cornish barn conversion have fashion design backgrounds. The Cob is just one of three properties on a seven-acre smallholding in Bude – take over all three, and you could have a group holiday for up to 21 guests. The architecture and decoration are a departure from Cornwall’s many nautical-inspired holiday homes, with clerestory windows inspired by Norwich Cathedral. Bifold doors fill the open-plan kitchen with light – in the summer months you can use the BBQ and al fresco dining table. A private hot tub is exactly positioned for the evening sun and there’s a huge shared lawn with football goals and den-building space for children. Not too far away, you’ll find all the best things that Cornwall offers holidaymakers: surf beaches, big-name restaurants and coastal pub walks.

Killiehuntly Farmhouse

Scotland

Killiehuntly Farmhouse has stood watch over the rugged landscape of the Cairngorm mountains since 1850. Reopened in 2015 as a Scottish guesthouse with a distinctly Scandinavian look and feel, Killiehuntly represents a new generation of small and special places to stay. Designed as a home from home for up to eight people, this is an exclusive-use setup. Life at the farmhouse is about taking the day at your own pace and guests are encouraged to treat it like a friend’s house: you can help yourself to a cold beer or negroni from the honesty bar or sprawl on the sofa with a book after a day exploring the hills. A hearty breakfast is provided every morning, and tea and cake are always on offer. In the evenings, a family-style meal is served in the dining room or at the kitchen table, which is included in the rate.

Court House Farm

Bristol

This smallholding near Bristol dates to the 16th century and is centred around two stone manor houses. Its peaceful two acres of grounds have been beautifully planted, with tall grasses and flowered gardens surrounding the old timber outbuildings, and a communal courtyard strung with festoon lighting. It feels far away from the outside world, but guests are just half a mile from central Portishead, a marina town with restaurants, shops and an art-deco lido. The adjoining manors (one sleeping up to seven, the other up to 14) can be rented separately or as a pair. Huge original wooden doors and arched windows remain, along with a dramatic hexagonal tower. The thick walls have been limewashed and – though modern comfort is key (there’s piping-hot water, a superb kitchen and a TV room) – the blend of mid-century, antique, vintage and contemporary furnishings make the place feel timeless.

Cothelstone Manor

Somerset

Cothelstone Manor is a newly restored Grade II*-listed Elizabethan manor house that’s just opened for private stays. Owned and managed by the Warmington family, the manor stands as a testament to centuries of history and a commitment to preserving British heritage. Steeped in tales of wars, renovations and generations past, the manor is just two hours outside of London and is set within 1,500 acres of organic, regenerative farmland, ancient woodlands and rolling countryside. Interior designer Edward Bishop spearheaded the project, breathing life back into the manor by creating a space that reflects both its historic charm and its modern makeover. There are seven bedrooms, six bathrooms and a tasteful juxtaposition of 16th-century Elizabethan architecture with Victorian interiors.

West Cawthorne

Yorkshire

On the edge of the North York Moors, West Cawthorne is a collection of properties across 26 acres of farmland. Two beautifully restored 19th-century stone barns, The South Range and The West Range, overlook the Vale of Pickering. The open-plan living areas are decorated in neutral colours and natural tones that let the outdoors do the talking. The barns are spacious, family friendly and beautifully furnished, making them a great place to spend time relaxing and catching up. There are also two one-bed A-frame cabins. In 2020, the area, alongside the neighbouring Yorkshire Dales National Park, was awarded International Dark Sky Reserve status – stars, planets and the Milky Way can be seen with the naked eye.

Wood Farm House

Cotswolds

After a full remodel by interior designer Millie Turner, this five-bedroom Cotswolds farmhouse almost looks like a boutique hotel. With living areas designed for both entertaining and unwinding (there’s even a cinema room behind a hidden door), Wood Farm House is a classic honey-coloured Cotswolds stone property with a grand entrance hall and open-plan orangery. Here, you’ll find the central living, kitchen and dining space complete with beautiful bespoke furniture, marble-topped Olaf kitchen cabinets, a dedicated bar space and a walk-in larder. A large farmhouse-style dining table takes centre stage. If you’re visiting in the summer months, you can make use of the Ofyr BBQ, which doubles up as a fire pit.

The Coach House

Cotswolds

Behind high gates in the pretty village of Cold Aston, The Coach House is a Cotswold hideaway for four. Classically styled, this 18th-century, Grade II-listed building has original floors, beams and exposed stone walls, which add character and a timeless appeal, while underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove keep things cosy. The ground floor flows through a simple, well-equipped kitchen and a beautiful living and dining space. Upstairs are two pretty bedrooms, one with a free-standing bath and shower room. Guests can enjoy lazy breakfasts and relaxed suppers at the eight-seater dining table, then retire to the comfy sofas around the wood-burning stove. During the summer months, open the doors onto the courtyard and enjoy the late afternoon sunshine.
