FASHION

Dick’s

This small, perfectly formed shop in swanky Stockbridge is everything you could hope for in a boutique. In a selection that’s defined by quality fabrics and relaxed fits, great local brands – look for knitwear from Harley, McGeorge and Jamieson’s of Shetland – are presented alongside European heroes like Casey Casey and Massimo Alba.

Frontiers Woman

In Edinburgh’s West End, Frontiers Woman is a beacon of contemporary womenswear. Ganni, Rixo and LF Markey are all here, but this is also a place where you can beat the Scottish weather with boots from Red Wing, gloves from Hestra or just some toasty Anonymous Ism socks. Across the road, Frontiers Man has a similarly on-point selection of menswear.

Epitome

New Town boutique Epitome is a temple to enduring style. The curation leans luxe but the atmosphere is laidback. The labels on show might be more familiar as menswear brands – you’ll find Drake’s scarves, Danner boots and OrSlow denim here – but here they have been curated for women. Expect to be surprised and delighted.

Monica Vinader

Monica Vinader’s artisan-made jewellery has probably caught your eye in Selfridges or Liberty over the years. The brand’s brand-new flagship in Edinburgh is the place to discover everything this sustainable, transparent brand can do. Its newest store reflects its commitment to the Earth: amid lots of natural textures, individual pieces are foregrounded on pebble ceramics. As well as offering welding and free engraving services, the store has got a chic piercing studio at the back.

Treen

Vegan fashion is the focus of this Stockbridge store. Womenswear names to look for include Skall Studio, Mother of Pearl, Sancia, Thinking Mu and Nudie Jeans. Its menswear collection runs from Lavenham to Wax London. Uniting them all is a serious commitment to slow fashion. Treen’s well-chosen selection of lifestyle goods is a rich source of gifts.

Armstrong & Son

Edinburgh’s best-known vintage store now has four spots around town: Grassmarket, Teviot Place, Clerk Street and Cockburn Street. At each of them, quality is high and you stand a fair chance of hitting on the perfect varsity jacket or a classic pair of Levi’s – or leaving with something completely different that you never knew you needed.

Corniche

No mean feat, this independent designer store has spent almost 50 years at the cutting edge of fashion. It started out introducing Edinburgh to Japanese labels like Yohji Yamamoto, Commes des Garçons and Issey Miyake. Vivienne Westwood was among the first British designers Corniche showcased – and the brand is still in store, alongside newer avant-garde names like Aleksandr Manamis.

Aetla Jewellery

Aetla exists to give lesser-known jewellery makers the audience they deserve. Founder Keira has built a roster of almost 20 designers, whose work she showcases in a refined Stockbridge boutique. Scottish names such as Alison MacLeod and Fraser Hamilton share shelf space with international designers like Alison Waese and Pernille Holm.

Kestin

This is a place to borrow from the boys. Local lad Kestin Hare worked for Burberry and Margaret Howell before going it alone. His recent menswear collections have drawn on a Scottish childhood that spanned summer holidays on Skye and fishing trips with his grandad. There’s a beautifully modern outdoorsiness to his pieces – with their high-quality fabrics and lovely textures, we already know they’ll stand the test of time.

LIFESTYLE

Jorum Studio

Scottish perfumer Euan McCall opened Jorum Studio in 2019. Nature is his primary inspiration, and scents like Gorseland, Firewater and Rose Highland feel beautifully Scottish. Others speak to further away lands – Medullary-Ray evokes springtime in Tuscany, while Athenaeum conjures childhood memories of high summer. The shop in Stockbridge is the best place to try before you buy.

Edinburgh Mercantile

Tucked between Dick’s and Kestin in Stockbridge, Edinburgh Mercantile is an old-time general store with a sustainable mindset. From its Leach Pottery plates to St David’s Cross blankets, all of its homewares are practical, elegant and built to endure – and many are sourced from within the British Isles.

The Method

This Stockbridge stalwart embraced the wellbeing revolution early, quickly establishing itself as a go-to for brands that share its holistic approach to life. Candles from SOH Melbourne and fragrances from Maison Louis Marie are now offered alongside MODM – The Method’s own made-in-Scotland skincare range. MODM’s products, all hand-blended in Edinburgh with natural ingredients, are used in the Ayurvedic-influenced treatments it offers in a dedicated private space within the store.

Bard Scotland

Right on the Water of Leith, Bard Scotland is a shop, but it’s also a sort of wonderful curation service. Owners Hugo and James have travelled the country, seeking out its talented craftspeople, and gathering their wares in an old customs house in Leith. This is the place to discover knives forged in Dumfries & Galloway, tumblers hand-blown in Galashiels, and strawback chairs knotted in Lerwick. Uniting them all is a commitment to Scottish heritage and quality.

Jeffreys Interiors

Jeffreys is a rich source of interiors inspiration. The female-led business has been around for more than 100 years, becoming an interior design service in this century. Any time spent in its Stockbridge showroom will throw up an idea or two for that statement piece that will finally bring your own home together.

Cadenhead’s Whisky Shop

This is the place to pick up a bottle of that obscure Speyside single malt your dad’s been dropping hints about. But it’s more than that too. Cadenhead’s has been in business for more than 180 years and you’ll get a sense of that rich history at its shop on Canongate. You might also get a taste for its wares – in which case it’s good to know it has a much newer tasting room on Chiltern Street in London now.

Valvona & Crolla

You should go to this 90-year-old Italian deli for the high-quality local produce, for the fresh fruit and veg it brings direct from Milan each week, and for the bread and pastries from the on-site bakery. But you should also just for the experience of being there. It’s an old-school treat that reminds us of what grocery shopping should be.
