One word of warning: let the hotel know you’re bringing your pet along at the time of booking, as it might determine which room you can stay in and, in most cases, you’ll incur a small cleaning fee too.
Timbrell’s Yard, Wiltshire
On the pretty banks of the Avon, this 18th-century listed building is the country retreat of dreams. Aesthetically it ticks all the boxes: you’ll find exposed stonework, epic arched windows and oak-beams galore. The most enchanting detail? Each February, Bradford-upon-Avon plays host to a pancake race. We’d absolutely recommend co-ordinating your stay with that. Bring your four-legged friend too – you’ll just pay an extra £10 cleaning fee once you get there. They’ll get dog treats and, if you don’t bring your own, you can request blankets and bowls too.

Artist Residence, Brighton
This 24-bedroom townhouse is a feast for art-loving eyes. Local artists were invited to work their magic on the hotel’s interior in exchange for free stays, and the results are as brilliant as the concept itself. Expect murals, hand-painted walls and creative surprises around every corner. And because it’s Brighton, you’ll have some epic sea views to boot. If animals are coming along, you’ll need to book either the Below Deck room for four, or bigger Below Deck room for six. There’s a £15 charge per dog, per night. Included in that price they’ll get luxurious treats from Lily’s Kitchen as well as their own bed and bowl.

Kings Arms, Hampton Court Palace
After a two-year renovation, this gorgeous 18th-century listed building has finally reopened. It’s worth staying for the food alone: Michelin-star winner Mark Kempson oversees the menus at The Six restaurant, showcasing produce from the gardens of next-door Hampton Court Palace. Dogs are so welcome at the Kings Arms, there’s no extra charge for bringing them along – and plenty of free treats. You can even take them for dinner in the restaurant or drinks in the bar; the only dog-free area is the lounge.

Brownber Hall, Yorkshire Dales
This Victorian country home has just nine bedrooms – and yes, that is original William Morris wallpaper you see. Nearby walks in the Howgill Fells are epic and the hotel’s resident lab Bella might join you. There are also multiple wild swimming spots should you wish to take the plunge. Either way, you’ll work up an appetite for their homemade sourdough pizzas. Dogs will love the food too – each pup is given a Westmoreland sausage for breakfast.

The Talbot Inn, Frome
For top-notch gastropub food, head to this 15th-century coach house in sublime Somerset. Its famous Sunday roasts feature a smorgasbord of locally sourced produce, served alongside beers from local breweries Butcombe and Keystone. There are just eight rooms, with dogs welcome in the bar, restaurant, sitting room and to stay in Room 8, which boasts a four-poster bed, sofa and armchair. Guests can walk off lunch on the Colliers Way, a 25-mile former railway line you can access from the nearby historic village of Mells.

The Rectory Hotel, Cotswolds
In the village of Crudwell, nestled between Malmesbury and Cirencester, lies this grown-up getaway. The former rectory was designed to house the local rector’s 14 children. Today guests can choose from 18 Farrow & Ball-painted bedrooms – 15 in the main house and three in the cottage, which are perfect for families. From May to October, you can take a dip in the hotel’s pretty outdoor (and yes, heated) pool. While the Negroni cocktail bar might be where you unwind, your mutt can look forward to mouth-watering treats in your room, as well as a comfy bed of its own.

The Goodwood Hotel, Chichester
This glamorous West Sussex venue is a total flurry of excitement during Goodwood’s various festivals of horse racing and motorsport. Time your stay in between those for the best prices and much better availability. Dogs are well catered for: they are invited to dinner in the Farmer, Butcher, Chef restaurant and there are dog-friendly walking maps for the more adventurous. They’ll also get their own comfy bed, dog bowl and tasty treats in your room. Pet owners may choose to stay in the Signature and Garden rooms only.

The Bonnie Badger, East Lothian
Half an hour’s drive from Edinburgh you’ll find the Bonnie Badger. The hotel has been beautifully restored by restaurateur Michaela and her husband, Michelin-starred chef Tom Kitchin. Obviously, the food is superb: think Loch Fyne oysters followed by Highland Wagyu burger and chips. If you want to bring your dog, let the hotel know so they can book you into one of the canine-friendly Superior or Deluxe rooms. There’s a surcharge of £20 per night, which includes bowls and beds.

This 17th-century coaching inn is as cute as they come. With 14 all different bedrooms, it ticks all the country escape boxes. In winter, stay warm by the fire or, even better, in your very own freestanding tub. Pups are welcomed in the rooms, restaurant and gardens, plus they’ll get their own bowl and luxurious dog bed. After muddy walks in the Cotswolds, they can enjoy some bath time of their own with the Paw Naturel dog shampoo provided.

This is the ultimate seaside hotel, but with every luxurious detail you could think of, including one of the very best hotel breakfasts we’ve had. Watergate Bay itself boasts one of Cornwall’s best beaches, especially at sunset. A walk around the headland will deliver cliff-top views for the ages. Dogs are allowed in 40 of this hotel’s 71 rooms: make sure to ask for an Ocean Wing Room, or any of the Coach House rooms.
