The Hot Product: Clogs

Fashions have a habit of coming back around and love them or loathe them, this spring/summer the clog has been reinvented by Celine, Isabel Marant and Hermès (as seen on Camille Charriere). The high street has followed suit, so you’re bound to see plenty of them this season. Tempted to give them a go? Here’s what you need to know…

What’s it all about?

Traditionally worn by Dutch farmers and dating back to the 13th century, the clog originally took off as a fashion trend in the 60s and has gone on to be a footwear favourite for style icons like Alexa Chung, Chloe Sevigny and Sarah Jessica Parker. This year, the shoe has found momentum once more, thanks in part to Hermès’ SS21 show, where creative director Nadège Vanhée-Cybulski sent every model down the runway wearing a studded pair, either in black, brown, taupe or cream.

Who’s wearing them?

It didn’t take long for fashion girls to fall for Hermès’ streamlined take on the typically clunky design– influencer Camille Charrière has been spotted sporting a black pair, while cool girl Jen Azoulay has shared hers multiple times on Instagram. If you’re keen to try out the trend but Hermès just isn’t in the budget, the good news is there are plenty of other brands offering more affordable styles – specifically Ancient Greek SandalsFabritizio Viti and Loeffler Randall, all of whom have embellished options perfect for the upcoming season.

Where & when?

More playful than flats but not as dressy as a heel, clogs are the perfect choice when you want to make a bit of an effort and add a bit of personality to your look. Thanks to their (mostly) manageable heel height, they offer a practical way to transition into dressing up again after lockdown and they’re surprisingly versatile, too. Style them with billowy dresses, double denim, or dungarees – just remember to balance them out with a more feminine piece, be it some gold jewellery or a pretty blouse.
