A Chic Stylist & Consultant Shares Her Style Dos & Don’ts
DO Dress To Suit Your Mood
When I don’t know what to wear, I always think about how I want to feel that day. Do I want to feel comfortable and cosy? Do I want to feel more glamorous? That drives how I dress for the day. At this time of year, I recommend layering when in doubt – a tailored blazer, an oversized trench, lightweight knits, denim, trousers and a great belt.
DO Take An Inventory Of Your Wardrobe
Take inventory of your wardrobe and what you have – do you buy the same things over and over? Do you love what you own, or have you outgrown it? Then start looking at people whose style you love – whether that’s on Pinterest, Instagram or maybe even one of your friends. What type of attitude do they have? How can you incorporate one piece instead of changing your entire look?
DO Invest In Staples
When you have beautiful staples, you can mix and match everything. My wardrobe consists of a few foundational pieces, and I rotate the accessories each year to make it feel new and fresh. A transitional dressing must-have would be a leather blazer. I recently bought one and find it works best with knits layered over a t-shirt, for a meeting during the day or out at night, with a pair of heeled boots. It’s edgy but still feels classic. T-shirts and denim work all year round, so they’re always worth the investment.
DO Adopt Failsafe Formulas
Right now, one of my go-to looks is a t-shirt with a V-neck sweater under a blazer. It’s a simple 90s look and I love the simplicity. When it comes to going out, I find a black smoking jacket works for all occasions. I love it dressed down with vintage Levi’s and loafers or with a matching black trouser and heels at night. I’ve worn it for black tie event, cocktail parties, meetings and lunches.
DO Find Your Brands
One of the brands I’m loving right now is By Malene Birger – it makes such beautiful and timeless pieces but always with a twist. I also love Métier, which is a luxury bag and leather goods company based in London. It’s so good at mixing functionality with unparalleled design – the ultimate luxury.
DON’T Forget To Accessorise
A belt is a great way to ground an outfit and to create more of a mood – whether it’s an oversized buckle, slightly western. I would also recommend investing in scarves and jewellery that feels personal to you – wearing a black t-shirt with a gold chain bracelet or layered necklaces is so effortless. For me, style is in the details.
DON’T Impulse Buy
Money doesn’t buy style or taste. You can easily shop on a budget while still looking luxe – just stick to a neutral colour palette and if you do invest, make your one purchase a bag or a pair of shoes. I love ARKET and COS for beautiful wardrobe staples.
DON’T Just Follow Trends
Oversized might be trending, but I wouldn’t recommend it for everyone. Fit and shape is completely dependent on someone’s body type. What part of your body do you like and want to accentuate? Ask yourself that instead of just following trends. If you do go oversized, try an oversized coat but wear something more tailored underneath to create some shape. I only buy something if I feel connected to it and see myself wearing it for more than three years. If you really want to tap into a trend, do it in a small way at first.
DON’T Just Shop The New Season
It’s best to shop for knitwear in the summer, which sounds strange but I always recommend picking it up in the sale. I’ve bought some beautiful knitwear in the warmer months. The brands I’m loving include Totême, Skall Studio and Lisa Yang.
DON’T Follow Any Rules
There are really no rules – style and fashion should be fun. Follow your intuition when you shop and get dressed, and only purchase pieces you love. If you are at all hesitant, return it.
