Style Rules: Emma Hoareau

Between glowing skin, stunning beachscapes and enviable bikini pics, Emma Hoareau’s Instagram account is one of the most inspiring out there. We chatted to the lifestyle blogger about summer wardrobe staples, beauty essentials and her number one style rule…

My style is quite simple. I have quite a paired back wardrobe and rely on good quality denim, shirts and knits. I don't like to feel too 'girly' and tend to only wear white, black, brown, navy and nude – with the odd pop of colour. I've found I feel most 'me' in neutral tones and that allows me to play around with jewellery and makeup more. I feel confident in good, quality clothing that is well cut. It’s part of the reason I work with a limited colour palette, as it means everything goes together. I need fewer pieces, so I can spend a little more on each one.

You should always feel comfortable – that’s my number one style rule. No matter how 'stylish' something is, if you don't feel comfortable you won't come across as confident. Style is a direct result of self-assurance.

My Redone Stovepipe jeans are my favourite piece in my wardrobe. They just fit so well and last a long time – it's always worth investing in high-quality denim. My Joseph cashmere coat is the best investment I ever made. It's still one of my favourite things I own and just makes everything look so chic.

Since the weather has warmed up I'm opting for denim shorts and oversized linen shirts, or lightweight dresses with great sandals. During lockdown, I’ve been prioritising buying things to wear around the house that are comfortable for sitting on the sofa, but chic enough to conduct a Zoom call in, too.

I love following Instagram accounts that get me dreaming and feeling inspired. The thing I find hardest about lockdown is not being able to stimulate my brain in the same way and get my creative juices flowing. Accounts like @C_l_o@ignant@thankyou_ok and @viancasoleil have been my go-to's.

I love supporting smaller brands normally, but it’s something I’ve become especially aware of in lockdown. Paloma Wool is an amazing Spanish brand that is all about art and expression – their pieces are beautiful and the campaigns are shot so well. St Agni is a great Australian brand that makes the most wonderful elevated basics. Penney & Bennett is a New Zealand label that makes the softest bedsheets and outfits to wear to bed – I love their white shorts and wear them around the house or to the beach in summer. Another is Cooke & Kin, an amazing Australian sustainable swim and resort wear brand that has the most beautiful designs.

If I could swap wardrobes with anyone, it would have to be with someone who has a totally different personal style to me – it would be so fun to experiment with colour and pattern and see how it all works together.

When it comes to summer beauty swaps, I love a product called Bronz Impulse from Institut Esthederm that helps wake up melanin in the skin – it still protects while also giving you a longer, deeper tan. It's seriously amazing.

The products I’m relying on right now are Elizabeth Arden Daily Repair Serum to brighten and soothe the skin, Dermalogica Retinol Clearing Oil which helps diminish breakouts and, of course, SPF. Right now, I'm loving the Dr Sturm sun drops. They're such a wonderful texture for under makeup.

Tandem is my favourite under-the-radar beauty brand. The products are sustainable, come at a very affordable price and work wonders.

Last September a friend and I visited Milos for the first time. It was so magical – the light, the ocean, the sunsets, the food... I can't wait to go back. It was the best place I travelled to last year.

I was meant to be heading to Ibiza to celebrate my 30th with a group of friends. It's a shame we can't make it this year but I'm hoping we’ll be able to go for summer 2021.

The first place I’ll visit once we can is my hometown, Paris.
