Style Rules With Marisa Martins

Equal parts simple and feminine, Marisa Martin’s approach to minimal styling always feels fresh and exciting. Here, she reveals why less is more, as well as her favourite brands – from high street to designer…

I would describe my style as simple, minimal and feminine. I want every piece in my wardrobe to be as interchangeable and versatile as possible, so taking a minimalist approach works best for me.

I try not to focus on trends. Instead, it’s about buying pieces I really love, that way my wardrobe always feels current and relevant to who I am. This summer I’ve lived in white, so before the season is over I’d love to invest in Mara Hoffman’s Catalina jacket and Eldora pant set – it’s so classic.

The piece I couldn’t live without is a black blazer. It’s my most worn item all year round, and my oversized Sunderbay one makes every outfit look so effortless – right now, I love wearing it over dresses.

My favourite thing I’ve worn this summer is my Realisation Par Roxy dress. It fits me like a glove and the simple design makes it easy to style – chucking it on with the oversized blazer and a pair of Converse has been my go-to look of late.

I want every piece in my wardrobe to be as interchangeable and versatile as possible, so I find taking a minimalist approach works best for me.

Quality over quantity is a motto to live buy. I want to wear clothes that look and feel expensive (even if they aren’t), so I tend to invest in higher quality fabrics and well-tailored pieces.

When it comes to jewellery, less is more. I prefer more delicate pieces I can wear all the time and don’t have to think about taking on and off. My recent on-rotation favourites include a chain link bracelet from Monica Vinader and an understated diamond ring from Nyssa Jewellery.

Arket is my favourite place to shop on the high street. I feel like everything in there is designed for me. At the moment, I have my eye on an amazing leather blazer. My top tip? Go there for the basics.

There’s nothing better than discovering smaller brands. Cold Laundry is one of the most effortlessly cool ones I’ve come across, and I find their photography particularly inspiring. Kendra Duplantier’s collection is small but I’d wear every single one of her pieces, especially the cut out ‘Bassi’ trousers. Finally, Ju The Brand – their ethos is ‘for women that need no embellishment’ – which describes my style exactly.

If I had to wear one brand forever it would be Jacquemus. I love their designs and everything it stands for. Each collection is the perfect balance of elegant, playful, and sexy, and it feels as if it was designed to empower and celebrate the female form – exactly what I want from my clothes. I also love Prada, Totême and Tove, all of which do minimalism so well.

The last thing I bought was the Nanu top from Simonett. It’s designed to be worn multiple ways and I’m still discovering new ways to wrap and tie the straps! Super cool and versatile.

My favourite thing in my wardrobe is definitely my Galvan Siren dress. I love the subtle bead embellishment and I feel amazing in it. Better still, it’s currently on sale and because it’s such a timeless design, it’s definitely worth snapping up.

It’s not often I regret buying things, but I purchased a black short sleeved shirt from Massimo Dutti during lockdown which I haven’t worn yet. Hopefully I’ll have an opportunity to wear it soon now that restrictions are easing. I’m looking forward to getting my jeans back out too!

Life’s too short to be defined by rules. In my opinion, it’s better to buy clothes you love, feel comfortable in or make you feel empowered, instead of what's on trend. Wear what makes you feel good.
