Style Rules: The Style Idealist

There’s a lot of monochrome-heavy Instagram accounts out there right now, which makes Karina, aka Style Idealist, all the more likely to brighten up your feed. With a penchant for bold colours, dramatic sleeves and interesting prints, she’s one of our favourites for fun fashion – here, she tells us her most important style rules…

I’m definitely a thrown on and go kind of girl, which is why I love a one-piece so much. I’m definitely more adventurous when it comes to choosing an outfit for a night out – something that accentuates my figure is a must, along with a statement feature like puff sleeves, a bold print or bright colour. I absolutely love Stine Goya, House of CB and Kitri Studio for statement pieces.

My biggest investment piece is my Mara Hoffman Violet knotted organic-cotton midi dress that I nabbed in the MATCHESFASHION.com sale a few weeks ago. I’ve been longing for a piece from Mara Hoffman for a long time and I love how this dress fits and feels. It’s such a classic, capsule piece for my wardrobe.

I’m definitely not one to shy away from colour – I’ll wear every shade. I’m also a big fan of tonal dressing – there’s something so dreamy about neutrals on neutrals or a pink on pink suit. Yellow is also one of my favourite colours.

Being mid-size, the fabric quality and fit is also really important, which is why I mix curated high-street pieces and well-considered investment pieces.

My number one style rule is to invest in yourself – wear clothes that fit well and make you feel confident. I’m a big believer in putting outfits together that make you feel happy and like the most comfortable version of yourself.

I would describe my style as feminine, effortless, bright and fun. I’m ultimately quite a lazy dresser, so simple formulas like a midi dress with a trench coat and sandals, or a midi skirt paired with a tee and blazer are my go-to. Being mid-size, the fabric quality and fit is also really important, which is why I like to mix curated high-street pieces and well-considered investment pieces.

The Loewe basket bag is number one on my summer wish list. Even though travelling abroad isn't really on the agenda this summer, I’m really keen to indulge in a UK staycation. I can’t wait to find a hotel in the countryside, go on long walks and dress up for dinner. That bag would be the perfect accessory.

I’m not sure if I’m coveting any specific trends this season, but I’m certainly opting for more summer staples like linen and cotton summer dresses, clean lines and clothes that will have a lasting impact in my wardrobe.

As I’m self-employed and usually work from home, I love the chance to dress up. It gives me such a mood boost. I’ll usually reach for one of my Sleeper dresses – they’re made of 100% linen, are so comfortable, and yet incredibly flattering. Alternatively, I’ll reach for my linen trousers or cycling shorts for a more relaxed look.

If I’m feeling uninspired or feel like I’m in a style rut, I instantly turn to Tracee Ellis RossKaren BritchickMonikh and thenxcvintage for inspiration. Even though they’re all very different, they all nail their daily looks so effortlessly.

If I could swap wardrobes with anyone, it would be @nnennaechem. Not only is she a colour combo queen, the way she mixes prints and patterns is amazing. Her wardrobe would definitely inspire me to try new things and not play it safe.

If I had to choose one brand to wear forever it would be Joseph. It’s contemporary and you’re guaranteed to find all your luxe essentials. I’m also loving OMNES, a London-based sustainable brand whose ethos is ‘fashion that doesn’t cost the earth’ – which is so important.

My number one tip for feeling confident? Be your biggest supporter and try new things. You’re never going to feel 100% confident all the time but the more you push yourself, the less intimidating things will feel.

The secret to good style is to forget the trends and wear what makes you happy. Also, find a good tailor – it can really transform an outfit.
