A Cool Brand Owner Shares Her New Year Wish List

New York ready-to-wear brand La Ligne has become a favourite among the fashion elite. Its co-founder – and former American Vogue fashion editor – Valerie Macaulay clearly has her finger on the pulse, so we asked the newly-minted Londoner what she’s excited about right now…

*1.The Winter Coat*

I love outerwear from The Row. Its coats are so luxurious and elevate any look. Currently, I’m really into a maxi coat, something that shows just the point of a boot or a flash of a cool trainer. I have my eye on an oversized grey herringbone style and a bold poppy orange one. I score mine on Vestiaire.

*2.The Boots*

As I’m always running around, I am definitely a flats girl – or maybe something with just a tiny heel. I’m living in my sleek Khaite boots right now so they are worth the investment. I wear them over leggings with a chunky sweater or under a silky slip dress.

*3.The Trousers*

Trousers for life! I love effortless tailoring and a great pair of trousers will give you a cool confidence. Right now, I’m wearing our Colby pant on repeat as I love contrasting the silky shine with chunky knitwear and trainers. For a dressier look I style them with a loose, lacy camisole, a tuxedo jacket and a kitten heel.

*4.The New Year’s Resolution*

I will be investing in good strong basics and focusing on building full looks considering all aspects like socks and accessories. I will also be adding barrel jeans to my wardrobe as the shape is so modern – it's fun to play with the proportion with an oversized sweater and a skinny ankle boot.

*5.The Trainers*

I have a few pairs of adidas Gazelles that are my hit of colour for my go-to looks which are often very neutral head-to-toe monochrome. I love a flash of unexpected colour especially when paired with a cool sock.

*6.The Bag*

Recently I’ve been using a khaki Celine portfolio bag that fits my laptop and everything else I need. It looks chic under my arm and has a shoulder strap so I can wear it over a chunky sweater or coat. For a dressier take, I love my Rabanne sequin clutch – it looks great with my monochrome evening looks.

*7.The Jewellery*

Dorsey is a sustainable fine jewellery brand. I adore its lab-grown sapphire and emerald drop earrings. Emerald is my favourite stone and also happens to be my birth stone so it's a win-win.

*8.The Knitwear*

I have been living in our Val sweater in dark tan all winter – it goes with absolutely everything, is the perfect oversized fit and is made from 100% recycled cashmere.

*9.The Dress*

Our cashmere Sutton dress is one big cosy hug. I think it looks so chic with pointed flats or with a loafer and a coloured sock – it’s a piece that will always have a place in your wardrobe.

*10.The Beauty Product*

I’ve recently discovered Alex Eagle X La Bouche Rouge lipstick and it’s quickly becoming my favourite beauty essential. It’s the perfect shade of vibrant red and the finish is super matte, making it great for adding some everyday colour.

*11.The Beauty Tool*

I’ve enjoyed the benefits of red light therapy for years, but the Current Body red light mask for chest and face is a new purchase. I use it while listening to a meditation, which is probably the only downtime I get during the day.

*12.The Skincare*

I love Medik8 Retinol Cream as I have a lot of dark spots from my time in the sun and hormonal changes post-pregnancy. It also helps with the overall appearance and brightness of my skin. Right now, with a four-month-old and lots of sleepless nights, I can’t do without it.

*13.The Fragrance*

I like anything green or citrus smelling, and recently I discovered Vyrao. I love its I am Verdant scent and equally love the ombré green bottle, which looks practically curated on my dressing table.

*14.The Homeware*

Porta Romana is a British interiors brand that creates unique objects inspired by beauty in the natural world and designed to last a lifetime. I love this decorative plaster fountain lamp by artist and sculptor Viola Lanari.

*15.The Exhibition*

I can’t wait to see David Hockney at the National Portrait Gallery in London this year. The exhibition explores the artist’s work over the last six decades through his intimate portraits.

*16.The Art*

I love Sally Mann's photography, particularly her Immediate Family series. Her autobiography is also great – unflinchingly honest and gives a context to her pictures that adds another layer when you look at them.

*17.The App*

I'm interested in trying Zoe, the personalised nutrition system with at-home tests to see how you metabolise foods. Ultimately it can advise you on what to eat and any supplements to take to optimise your digestion and overall wellbeing.

*18.The Book*

I’m currently reading Zadie Smith's new one, The Fraud, which is her first historical novel. I’m only a few pages in so I don't have a review yet, but I love Zadie's characters and especially loved her own voice in Intimations

*19.The New Follow*

I’ve been especially inspired by @CourtneyGrow recently. I love her eclectic styling and she always has a mix of shopping suggestions from Amazon to Bottega Veneta. I can thank her for my new obsession with skorts and my growing sock collection.
