The Luxe List: September

This September, the SL team is sharing a selection of their favourite things right now. From our lifestyle desk’s new coffee table book of choice to the ultimate signature scent, from the exhibition to catch, to the style muse to follow on Instagram, our monthly Luxe List offers all the inspiration you need.

EDITORIAL: Hailey Bieber for Vogue

Never has a piece of editorial consumed Instagram like model Hailey Bieber channeling Princess Diana for Vogue Paris this month. Styled by the magazine’s fashion editor-at-large Virginie Benarroch, the shoot draws inspo from the icon’s late 80s/early 90s aesthetic – that means oversized varsity sweatshirts, cycling shorts, caps and personal glamour signifiers, like Louis Vuitton totes and chunky gold earrings. Bieber treads the fine line between impossibly aspirational and surprisingly replicable – something all too rare in magazines these days.

FRAGRANCE: An.Other

An.Other fragrances claim to have “stripped away everything. No fake moods. No models and celebrities. No showy brand names that nobody can see anyway. No nonsense.” The brand has binned market research reports and instead offered its perfumers total creative control and unlimited budgets. The result is a collection of perfumes that are clean, sustainable and made from ethically-sourced ingredients. Of the lot, we love number 18, made by Carlos Viñals, which draws inspiration from classic gin cocktails: think notes of grapefruit, juniper and ginger.

NEWSLETTER: Air Mail

Graydon Carter stepped down as editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair in 2017 after 25 years at the helm. Now he’s back on the scene with Air Mail, a new weekly newsletter. Every Saturday at 6am EST, a new issue will arrive in subscribers’ inboxes, offering everything from features on the latest royal scandals to celebrity profiles, film reviews and witty cartoons. Carter has likened it to the digital weekend edition of a non-existent international daily newspaper – both environmentally friendly and with free home delivery.

Of its current features, we love She Made Me designer Chloe Dunlop’s insider’s guide to Ibiza.

BOOK: The Testaments by Margaret Atwood

Already longlisted for the 2019 Booker Prize, in this long-awaited sequel to The Handmaid's Tale, acclaimed author Margaret Atwood answers the questions that have tantalised readers for decades. When the van door slammed on Offred’s future at the end of The Handmaid’s Tale, readers had no way of telling what lay ahead. Atwood’s sequel picks up the story more than 15 years after Offred stepped into the unknown, with the explosive testaments of three female narrators from Gilead.

FILM: The Goldfinch

Theodore Decker was 13 years old when his mother was killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The tragedy changes the course of his life, sending him on a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, and even love. Through it all, he holds on to one tangible piece of hope from that terrible day: a painting of a tiny bird chained to its perch. Based on Donna Tartt’s bestselling novel, this new film stars Nicole Kidman, Sarah Paulson, Ansel Elgort and Finn Wolfhard.

In cinemas 27th September

SHOW: Fleabag Live

The run of live shows might be sold out, but there’s still a chance to catch the award-winning, one-woman show that inspired the BBC’s hit TV series Fleabag, as it is broadcast live from the West End to cinemas across the UK on 12th September. Written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Fleabag is a rip-roaring look at some sort of woman living her sort of life. Fleabag may seem oversexed, emotionally unfiltered and self-obsessed, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. With family and friendships under strain and a guinea pig café struggling to keep afloat, Fleabag suddenly finds herself with nothing to lose.

COLLABORATION: Lucy Williams X Missoma

The third collaboration between Instagrammer Lucy Williams and cult jewellery label Missoma draws inspiration from 1987 – the year of Wiliams' birth. Naturally that means a heavy 80’s influence – just in time, as the renaissance trend continues to rage into autumn. Expect chunky chains, lattice hoops and one killer wanderlust campaign to boot.

CAMPAIGN: Secondhand September

Oxfam officially launched Secondhand September this weekend – their drive to encourage shoppers to ditch their high street habit and buy exclusively pre-loved items for a month. Supermodel Stella Tenant has backed the initiative, and appears – along with her 14-year-old daughter Iris – in its supporting campaign which is styled by Vogue legend Bay Garnett and shot by leading photographer Tom Craig. The fashion industry remains one of the most toxic to the environment, but now Oxfam joins the ranks of hundreds of retailers supporting more sustainable ways to shop.
