Micro Trend: Capri Pants

Where It Started
First designed in 1948 by Munich-based Sonja de Lennart, capri pants – also known as pedal pushers – first became popular in the 1950s, with stars like Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and Anita Ekberg all sporting them. De Lennart named the slim-fit cropped trousers as a tribute to the Italian island where she had spent countless holidays with her family. Capri pants continued to be popular throughout the 1960s, 1980s and 2000s – and now, after another 20-year hiatus, they’re officially back on the fashion agenda.
On The Runway
From Isabel Marant to Versace, everyone has put their own spin on the look this season. Jacquemus opted for a modern take on riviera chic, teaming denim capris with cropped white shirts and extra wide-brimmed hats, while Ferragamo kept things modern and minimalist with a tonal black shirt, black capris and black mules.
How To Wear It Now
Take your style cues from the Hadid sisters, who have both stepped out in capris recently, or Kendall Jenner, who prefers a 90s-inspired cropped legging. Or look to stylist Sylvie Mus and influencer Claire Rose, who have opted for black capris with oversized blazers, simple camis and knits. The key is to keep things tonal and classic, with ladylike accents like slingbacks and structured bags.
Get The Look
Mango, & Other Stories and ASOS Design have all leaned into the classic pedal-pusher look, while ARKET has come up with a ribbed leggings-capri hybrid. Denim brands like Frame have done their own version of a pedal pusher – and you’ll find designer takes everywhere from Versace to Jacquemus and Isabel Marant.
