The Cool Ways To Wear Shorts This Summer

There’s a reason you’re seeing shorts everywhere right now – they’re set to be big news this summer and there are some new shapes and design details worth knowing about. Here, our fashion broadcaster and editor Nana Acheampong picks her styles of the season…

From micro shorts to jorts, boxers to bermudas, there are so many different lengths and styles to choose from this season, and I want to wear them all. As someone who doesn’t own a single pair of jeans, shorts are a great alternative for me. Denim shorts have always been a favourite of mine, but I’ve tended to wear them exclusively on holidays or at festivals. Now, it’s great to have some options that work in a more professional setting, or for date night or Saturday brunch with the girls. They also feel smarter than a miniskirt when you want to show off some leg.

Shorts were all over the SS24 runways, with Prada, Gucci, Max Mara, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney and Isabel Marant featuring them in their shows. Since then, the street-style crowd have offered up a few ideas on how to wear them in real life. Whether you team them with a fine knit, crisp white shirt, knee-high boots or kitten heel, the styling is key to making sure you don’t feel too exposed. Micro shorts are the standout style of the season – so tiny they could easily pass off as underwear – and I can understand why most people would shy away from them, but I see them as an opportunity to get creative.

Whatever the style of shorts, high-waisted will always be my preferred cut as I love to accentuate my waist. I’m happy to play around with different lengths and silhouettes on the leg, including a loose fit around the thigh. The main reason you’d never catch me in a pair of capri pants or pedal pushers is because they give me horrid flashbacks, but I also have big thighs (which I love) and they are in no way flattering to my figure. I always stress how important it is to know how to dress for your shape. It is one of my most important style rules. To that end, here are some of the styles worth knowing about this season….

Boxer

We have the Miu Miu SS23 and SS24 shows to thank for the boxer short trend. These comfy shorts can be worn with a matching shirt or simple white tee.

Tailored

Tailored shorts are the OG – versatile, they can be easily worn for work or dressed up for an event or night out. They’re the go-to when you want to look grown-up and polished.

Micro Shorts

Micro shorts take a certain amount of confidence to pull off. The key is to play with proportions, either by adding an oversized blazer or an exaggerated blouse. They also look great with opaque tights.

Jorts

Jorts are the baby sister to bermudas. The same length, cutting just above the knee, the main difference is that they’re made from denim and have a more relaxed fit.

Knitted

Knitted and crochet shorts are the ideal pull-on piece for holidays over a bikini. Day to day, they can be worn with a fine knit and mules.
