How Nana’s Wearing The Colour Of The Moment

Aquamarine has emerged as one of this season's most in-demand shades. Here, SL’s fashion broadcaster and editor Nana Acheampong explains why the colour has made such an impact, how the fashion set are wearing it and the pieces she’ll be buying now and carrying into autumn…

There’s always one colour that comes to define a season, and for SS26 it has undoubtedly been aquamarine. Somewhere between turquoise, seafoam and that unmistakable Tiffany blue, it feels optimistic, escapist and nostalgic.

The runways made a convincing case for it. Prada used aqua on a sculpted A-line skirt, Burberry scattered turquoise across an embellished, crochet and fringed leather coat, while Emporio Armani  sent shimmering, almost liquid trousers down the catwalk. Turquoise also appeared at Dries Van Noten, Fendi and Courrèges, where it brought an instant freshness to the SS26 collections. I was immediately obsessed.

Diana May keeps things simple in head-to-toe black, letting the aquamarine bag do ALL THE TALKING. A masterclass in embracing colour while STILL LOOKING POLISHED and pulled-together.

In the end, though, the piece of the summer has been my aquamarine Chanel bag from Matthieu Blazy’s new era at the house. I’ve barely put it down. Blazy’s colourful Chanel accessories have become some of the most coveted pieces of the season, and I completely understand why. If funds were endless, I would also have added Stella McCartney’s aquamarine SS26 bags to my collection – the texture is everything, turning a beautiful colour into something tactile and unexpected.

The question now is: what happens to aquamarine when summer is about to end? Well, I’m not ready to retire it. Instead, I’ll be taking it towards the darker end of the spectrum. Think aquamarine against chocolate brown, oxblood, burgundy, charcoal grey or deepest navy. Black makes it feel sharper and more graphic, while rich espresso tones soften its brightness and make it more autumnal. There’s something particularly luxurious about a flash of this tropical blue against heavier wool, suede and leather.

I wouldn’t be afraid of wearing it head-to-toe either. I always say monochromatic dressing is one of the easiest ways to wear colour because the styling has essentially been done for you. A beautifully cut aquamarine suit is an instant outfit, as is a tonal shirt and skirt – simply vary the textures to give the look depth.

I wouldn’t be afraid of WEARING IT TOP-TO-BOTTOM either. I always say monochromatic dressing is ONE OF THE EASIEST WAYS to wear colour because the styling has essentially been done for you.

If full colour feels intimidating, accessories are your way in. An aquamarine bag against a chocolate coat, a pointed shoe beneath charcoal tailoring, or turquoise jewellery with a black knit will give you the hit without overwhelming the outfit. Aquamarine has been the colour of summer, but styled with autumn’s darker palette, it suddenly has a whole new life ahead of it.
