New York Fashion Week SS19 Street Style Trends

These days, fashion week is as much about what’s going on outside the shows as the runway itself. Whether it’s the peacocks preening for photographers or the world’s most esteemed editors running between shows, the outfits spotted on the city streets inform what we’re buying and wearing in an even more immediate way, meaning they’re increasingly becoming our go-to source of inspo. Here’s what we took away from this week’s New York SS19 attendees…

Checks Aren’t Just For Blazers

We all know a Prince of Wales check blazer is a must-have, but for a fashion approach try structured pinafores, oversized trenches and tailored dresses à la Jeanette Madsen and Jessie Bush. The street style stars show there are myriad ways to wear the style; whether it’s with chunky trainers or puff sleeve blouses, dress up or down for new season cool.

Pink & Red Is Still Cool

The rulebook is still out when it comes to colours that work together – we love that the unexpected red and pink combo is still proliferating the street style pics. Cool girls make it work by avoiding adding other shades into the mix – stick to block versions of the shades for a purist approach.

Cool Girls Clash Prints

Whether it’s subtle mismatched polka dots or florals-meets-jacquard-meets-snakeskin (in the case of Scandi blogger Emili Sindilev), clashing prints is proof you’ve got style chops. Keep it relevant to this season with midi skirts and vintage-inspired knits.

Handbags Are Getting Quirkier

Whilst the usual Loewe Puzzles and Dior Saddle bags were prolific, street style stars were also seen ditching conventional styles for more quirky accessories. From fun slogans to unusual shapes, it's time to streamline your necessities and upgrade your simple tote.

Oversized Blazers Still Rule

If you thought last season blazers were big, prepare to be surprised by this autumn’s crop. From statement shoulders to androgynous cuts, supersizing your tailoring is the fashion girl’s way to make it work right now – just add more glamorous details (silky fabrics, statement heels and gold jewellery all count) to keep the balance right.

Nightwear Works As Daywear

We love the idea of making pieces in our wardrobe work harder, so seeing fashionistas recycling eveningwear for daytime made for a refreshing change this week. The key to making it work? Pared-back beauty and comfy, contrasting flats. Permission to wear gowns for daytime granted.

Head-To-Toe Leopard Print Works

Chances are we've all got a bit of animal print in our wardrobe by now, and the fashion pack is confirming the look is going nowhere. Take heed and embrace a maximalist approach to the trend, opting for maxi dresses and two piece suits; the key is keeping accessories minimal to avoid Pat Butcher territory.
