The Background

After studying interior design and working across the industry in various roles, Kate decided she wanted to promote artisans and suppliers from the continent. “I’d had the concept of Hadeda in my head for some time,” she explains. “When I was younger, my mum (who is South African) and I ran a charity sale of South African design products, which was very well received, and we discussed stating something, but it never happened. Then, in my late 20s, it started to take form. I was living in Tanzania and had come across so many inspiring artists that I thought about how much I would love to show their work and make it into a business. But it wasn’t until after I had my three children that I had the courage to take the plunge, and Hadeda was born.”

The Brand

Hadeda – named after a South African bird beloved by locals for its loud birdsong – is a collective of unique home and lifestyle collections sourced from talented artisans and co-ops across many disciplines, including fashion, ceramics, art, weaving, beading and carpentry. The initial offerings included a collection of handwoven cane using traditional techniques by villagers in Malawi.

The Style & Inspiration

“From traditional passed-down techniques to modern design, there are so many streams of talented designers in Africa,” says Kate. “I want to share the magic, tradition and excitement of discovering these talented makers with others.”
