9 Rug Dos & Don’ts
DO avoid trends. A good-quality rug will last a lifetime; choose your favourite colours, not this season’s most popular shades.
DON’T go for manmade fibres. If in doubt, choose wool. It's a natural fibre, easy to clean and beautiful. Look out for the RWS label, which will ensure ethical animal welfare too.
DO think ethically. When you are buying, look out for fair-trade labels, such as Label STEP, Goodweave, Care and Fair. This will ensure your rug has been ethically made.
DO go for the best you can afford. A good rug should be an investment, like a piece of art. Go for quality.
DON’T go small. Rugs help anchor and frame furniture, so measure up properly and ask for professional advice on size. Often, you want your furniture sitting on top of your rug not around it.
DO rotate your rugs once to twice a year. This helps with wear and tear, and exposure to direct sunlight.
DON’T be afraid to go bold with pattern or colour. The design possibilities are endless. Rugs are works of art which can be customised into any design or colours, so it’s worth investing a bit more to get something that reflects your taste or the existing space.
DON’T restrict yourself. Get inventive. Rugs look great on the floor but try hanging one as a woven artwork – they make brilliant wall fillers and are great for the acoustics.
DO consider an underlay. Not only does it keep your rug firmly where you want it, but it also feels nice underfoot and helps extend the lifespan of your rug.
