Brand Showcase: London Basin Company
The Brand
With a background in interior design, it was Anna Callis’s search for colourful, patterned bathroom basins that led to the idea for the London Basin Company. After failing to find what she wanted, she designed the basin herself and had it hand-painted by an artist. Pleased with the results, Anna spied an opportunity to start a business offering more of her decorative designs. Then, one evening over dinner, she shared the idea with her daughter, Nathalie. Combining Anna’s experience as an interior and product designer with Nathalie’s background in marketing, the pair set up London Basin Company.
The Design
Each design starts with a mood board, including everything from a scrap of fabric to a holiday snap. “We do lots of research, we brainstorm, and we constantly bounce ideas off one another,” says Nathalie. “Eventually we agree on a final design and sketch. Then, we create multiple prototypes until we’re 100% happy. Our favourite part of the process is designing the basins and the hardest part is always deciding which ones should go into production. There are so many that never make it.”
The Production
Manufactured all over the world, from Europe to Asia, each basin is handmade by skilled craftsmen using only the finest quality porcelain. “With unrivalled attention to detail, each basin is finished and glazed by hand, meaning each design has its own unique character,” explains Nathalie. “It’s usually done using one of two techniques: the ‘under the glaze’ approach, where the pattern is applied to the clay, then glazed and fired; or the ‘over the glaze’ technique, where clay washbasins are glazed and fired, the pattern is then applied and followed by a further two firings to ensure better durability and an exquisite finish.”
The Future
Due to popular demand, the brand has already added vanity stands and mirrors to its range, and later this year, the duo plan to launch a tap collection, as well as new basin designs. “Our emphasis will always be on the core basin offering, but we want to to diversify the collection, offering more options for the bathroom,” says Nathalie.
