The Home Emporium To Know: Pentreath & Hall

Close friends Ben Pentreath and Bridie Hall never expected to open their own interiors store – but more than decade ago, they ended up doing exactly that. These days, it has a cult following, with loyal customers consistently flocking to the Bloomsbury premises and their online site. Here, the pair tell us more about their vision and pick out some of their favourite products.

Tell us, why did you open a shop?

“The shop opened almost by accident,” explains Bridie, “when Ben took on the now-famous building at 17 Rugby Street to expand his office (he’s an architectural and interior designer, and I am a decorative artist and maker) we decided to open a small shop in the front of the room. Within months, the office had outgrown the new space and the shop was proving to be incredibly successful.” Originally, it was called Ben Pentreath Ltd, but that soon became Pentreath & Hall in 2013.

How would you describe the brand?

“Simply put, it’s about good things for the home,” say Ben. “In our view, Pentreath & Hall is one of the most unusual and exciting shops in London. We want catching a glimpse of our traditionally painted, glossy black shop front and painted glass sign to be enough to tempt in the many passers-by, where they can then discover an Aladdin’s cave of antiques, new homewares and our range of exclusive decorative items.”

And what about the ethos of the brand?

“We’re hoping to create a new British tradition that respects the past, but is never dull,” Ben continues. “We love a mix of the new and the old, and always enjoy finding antiques, inspiring smaller makers and the people who are keeping the traditions of their craft alive. We only sell things that we ourselves would want in our own homes.”

What Are Your Favourite Products Right Now?

“Our creamware candlesticks have been made for us by an independent maker in Stoke-on-Trent, and our new cushions in Ben’s Morris & Co collaboration fabric are also a firm favourite at the moment,” says Bridie.
