An English-Inspired Home In New York

To better support modern family life, the rear of the house was reconfigured to create a generous entrance hall, boot room and cloakroom. These practical additions improve the flow of the home while preserving its original Victorian character.

This is where the home's layered English aesthetic is introduced, through a handcrafted Lorfords sofa, bespoke artwork depicting the Saratoga Race Course by artist Andie Dinkin, and metal sconces by Welsh maker Jess Wheeler. Rich colour and contemporary British craftsmanship are balanced with references to the local landscape and racing culture.

Designed as a convivial space for entertaining, the drinks parlour centres around a bespoke table surrounded by striped upholstered stools. A hand-painted mural wraps around the room, combining local landmarks with portraits of family members and beloved pets, creating a deeply personal focal point.

Here, a considered approach retains the room’s original simple white cabinetry and metro wall tiles rather than replacing them. The existing style was given renewed character through some carefully chosen decorative details, including a pendant light and a lively print.

The dining room pairs richly textured wall finishes with bespoke furniture and carefully sourced antiques to create a relaxed yet elegant atmosphere. At its centre is a solid oak dining table by a British furniture designer, complemented by classic Suffolk chairs painted in a vibrant contemporary red.

These combine patterned textiles, wallpapers and decorative details to create warm, characterful spaces, while the principal suite introduces a more dramatic mood through tailored drapery. Throughout the upper floor, colour and pattern reinforce the home's joyful and distinctly English decorative approach.
