How To Make Your Guest Room More Inviting

“A warm and welcoming guest bedroom starts with a comfy bed, lovely linen and soft pillows. Try to leave getting the room ready until the last minute and dress the beds with lots of cosy throws and cushions. A diffuser creates a welcoming scent plus a soft robe, quality towels, soap and some treats in the bath or shower are a good idea, too. A hairdryer, shampoo and conditioner always go down well. At this time of year, I add a small pre-lit Christmas tree and/or hang a couple of ornaments from the wardrobe. A few magazines or books are nice, and add a small vase of fresh flowers on the bedside table the day your guests arrive.”

“Make sure you have a comfortable mattress, and you can never go wrong with a four-poster bed. My favourite bed linen is by Volga Linen. It’s warm in winter and cool in the summer and has beautiful hemstitch detailing. I like a bottom fitted sheet and then a flat sheet with a duvet on top. Down pillows are a must and for the ultimate in luxury, it doesn’t get better than a cashmere blanket. While it’s not necessary to have tons of storage, it’s nice to have a couple of wooden or fabric-covered hangers, even if they're just on a hook on the back of the bedroom door. Don’t overlook proper curtains and for some more thoughtful touches, incorporate extra blankets, a carafe of water, a radio and a couple of books.”

“If space is limited, choose a bed with built-in drawers. Put pretty glasses on the bedside tables (from By Alice or Bias Editions). A dressing table with a good mirror and good lighting are also important. There’s nothing worse than trying to do your make-up in a dimly lit room. You could also create a drinks bar – put locally made spirits on a scalloped tray. As for the décor, go for a neutral wall colour and then add colour with the headboard, cushions, lamps and lampshades. For bedding, I use The White Company or Sophie Conran. As for the pillows, I prefer goose down – four for a double bed two for a single. Dressing gowns, slippers and candles are all thoughtful touches – as are some products in the bathroom. I love Enchanted Plants; all its products are completely natural.”

You can find some real treasures at local antiques markets for not a lot of money. A carefully placed mirror will add interest, while also maximising light and space – plus, it’s practical for your guests. Finally, never underestimate the power of good lighting, it can have a big impact on how a space feels.”
