The Brief

The client's family are originally from Borneo, which played a huge part in inspiring this scheme. They were very keen to create a space where you could sit and have coffee in the morning, and enjoy the view out to the common. That’s why we went for a banquette with scatter cushions to ensure it was comfortable and welcoming. Meanwhile, the kitchen and dining area is connected with the same flooring and wall colour, and spatially they’re adjacent to one another and share the same views.

The Colour Palette

We stuck to natural materials and warm tones in the form of bamboo units, sisal rugs and terracotta tiles. The vibrant fabric on the cushions is playful and the soft 'Borrowed Light' paint colour feels restful and calm. Yellow works so well here because it’s next to large south-facing Georgian windows, so the vibrancy injects warmth into the space, even on grey winter days.

The Nook Design

A dining nook has to be comfortable, and ideally should have a lovely view to enjoy. I like using patterned fabric to add interest and texture, but careful consideration needs to be paid to the lighting. We have three circuits in here – one for the dining room pendant, one for the kitchen wall lights and another for the spots. The different circuits allow the client to switch up the mood and atmosphere at any time of the day.
