Does Lip Balm Actually Work? SL Weighs In

Central heating and cold weather wreak havoc on our lips yet somehow it can be hard to find a lip balm that gets results. Here, we break down the ingredients to avoid, the simple hacks to try and the three lip conditioners that really work.

If you're one of those people whose balms aren’t soothing their dry lips properly, then you might be interested to know there is a reason behind it. According to experts, our love and habitual use of certain lip balms can actually make things worse, leading to a never-ending cycle of skin that’s dependant on moisture to stay supple. The solution isn’t to sack off lip treatments altogether - instead, it’s about using them at a minimum and being savvy with the ingredients you choose. Don’t just rely on balms either – there’s a few other tricks and tips to try before you give up on soft, smooth lips completely…

Drying/irritant ingredients to avoid:

  • Fragrances
  • Artificial colours
  • Menthol
  • Alcohol
  • Salicylic acid
  • Vitamin E

Nourishing ingredients to look out for:

  • Shea Butter
  • Beeswax
  • Sweet Almond Oil
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Cocoa Butter

Try an exfoliator: Physical lip exfoliation often yields better results than any balm. Look for one that contains sugar granules as these will help to slough off flakes, creating a smooth surface for lipstick. SL loves MAC’s Lip Scrubtious, a cult favourite backstage at shows too. For the cheapest option though, try using a dry toothbrush to buff away roughness in a gentle, circular motion.

Invest in a humidifier: If you’re really serious about your lip game, this little gadget could come in handy, especially at night. This is because experts claim many of us sleep with our mouths open (so glam), which in turn dries our lips out, but having a humidifier will work to make the air a little healthier.

Don’t forget your lip line: The outer edges of the lips often get quite chapped, so it’s important not to bypass applying product to this part. Try dabbing a small amount around the whole outer edge of your lips – you’ll notice a big difference.
