Elle Macpherson Shares Her Little Black Book Of Beauty

Elle Macpherson needs no introduction. One of the world’s most iconic supermodels, she’s famously claimed genetics will only get you so far – the rest comes down to looking after yourself. To find out how she does it, we asked her to share her little black book of beauty – from the treatments she swears by, to the beauty products she’s never without, here are the names and places she relies on time and again…

For Unusual Treatments…

“One of the most unusual treatments I’ve had was at the Russian Bathhouse in London’s South Kensington Club. The ‘Russian Dance of Leaves’ treatment involves a banya therapist moving large, leafy branches over your body with cold water to infuse the natural oil of the plant. It’s fantastic for cleansing, boosting circulation and improving the body’s immunity. It might be a little unconventional, but for me, there’s no such thing as a ‘weird’ treatment – it’s what works for you and your body.”

For Healthy-Looking Limbs…

“I do manual lymphatic drainage with Sheila Perez, but I wouldn’t really call it enjoyable – in fact, I call her Lady Torturer (ha!). All jokes aide, The Sheila Perez Method uses unique massage techniques to naturally sculpt the body. It has had such a profound effect on the way my limbs look and feel. I prefer natural solutions and remedies, which is why I love Sheila’s magic hands in place of invasive treatments. Her method helps to eliminate toxins, clear the lymphatic pathways, accelerate the metabolism and leave you looking lean, while feeling light. The pain is worth it.”

For Neat Nails…

“When I was living in London, I would see the manicurist Toni Jade. She does the best manicures and I miss her so much. It’s important to me to have beautiful hands, but that doesn’t always need to be fancy manicures. I keep my nails short as I’m constantly working with my hands, so I find a simple buffing with a nourishing oil on my cuticles makes for elegant nails. If I am going to do a colour, I usually choose white or black from the brand Kester Black as they are organic and non-toxic. Summer is the only time I experiment with different shades.”

For Great Hair…

“I go to Josh Wood Atelier when I’m in London for a colour and cut – he knows me so well and I can trust him to keep my look fresh, modern and natural. I don’t have any grey hair so some maintenance for shine with a rich colour works well for me. Dafne Evangelista at Dafne Beauty Lounge is the only person I trust when I am home in Miami. Dafne has a fantastic eye and knows exactly how to create a natural blonde – though right now, we’re having fun with darker, richer hues.”

For Everyday Wellness…

“I have a subscription to WelleCo’s Super Elixir daily greens so I never run out them. It’s my daily non-negotiable. For WelleCo, we came up with the idea of a subscription when I realised I was coming to the end of my product. I could get a subscription for coffee, so why couldn’t I get one for my WelleCo greens? I didn’t want to break my daily ritual while I was waiting for my refill, so we created a convenient subscription solution that meant I could order several products at once and have them arrive at my door without any hassle. It makes looking after my daily wellbeing really easy.”

For Skincare Staples…

“I love Dr Barbara Sturm’s products for my skin – especially The Good C Vitamin C Serum and Super Anti-Ageing Face Cream. I really find they work and do exactly as they promise. She’s a scientist, so she knows what your skin needs, and her products are so considered. We share a similar philosophy on living an anti-inflammatory lifestyle. I’ve struggled with dry skin in the past, and I’ve noticed that using her products alongside my two teaspoons of The Super Elixir has done wonders for my complexion – both tone and texture.”

For Beachy Waves…

“Sam McKnight’s products are amazing, and they smell incredible. My favourites are the Lazy Girl Dry Shampoo, which refreshes my hair between washes, and his Cool Girl Barely There Texture Mist – it’s lightweight, but it gives my hair plenty of volume and body.”

For Holistic Remedies…

“I tend to take a holistic approach to wellness by making sure my mind, body and spirit are nurtured in equal measure. I practice gratitude and journaling each evening. I also do meditation and breath work, which helps to calm my mind by processing my thoughts, improving focus and boosting my creativity. For my body, I like to do hot and cold plunge therapy to care for my muscles, and I love dry body brushing. It boosts your circulation, clears the system of any toxins and exfoliates your body for smoother, softer skin.”

For Unwinding At Home…

“I love to have the house lit with natural scents like sandalwood. I also prefer non-toxic candles, so anything free from things like paraffin wax and synthetic fragrances that contain chemicals. Relaxing in a bath with candles isn’t really my thing, but Epsom salt baths are great for detoxing the body. I will do these at least once a week.”

For Fragrance…

“I wore ‘Vetiver’ by Guerlain for about 30 years, but I also love ‘French Lover,’ by Frederic Malle. These days I swear by natural fragrances from the brand doTERRA, too. The Frankincense essential oil is my go-to because I know it’s healing my body and helping to rejuvenate my cells, while also providing a scent I love.”

For Go-To Make-Up…

“My favourite make-up products are from Westman Atelier. Gucci Westman makes clean, considered make-up that keeps my face looking natural. I apply her Vital Skin Foundation Stick and the Baby Cheeks Blush, followed by the Lit Up Highlight Stick on my cheekbones, which gives me a beautiful glow. Gucci creates everything herself and is one of the best make-up artists in the industry. We’ve worked together since the days when I was shooting campaigns for Revlon, and it’s been wonderful to see her business blossom.”

For Impressive Facials…

“When I’m in London, I see Vaishaly Patel, who does great brows, too. If I’m in Sydney, I go to Dr. Joseph Hkeik at All Saints Clinic. At home, I believe the best facial is what you put inside your body. If I’ve got a big shoot or an event coming up and my skin needs a boost, I start juicing four times a day, with lots of turmeric, ginger, garlic, green vegetables and cucumber. I noticed a difference in my skin within a week.”

Finally, The Beauty Advice She Always Follows…

“Brows are really important for the architecture of your face. If your brows are done, your whole face looks polished, so I’ll often just do my brows with a blonde pencil for definition and go over them with a light brown gel. This way my brows look groomed, but not harsh or overpowering. I compliment this with a bronzer and lip gloss instead of heavy make-up. The biggest mistake people make it to fill their brows in a shade that’s too heavy or dark for their face – it looks unnatural. I prefer to use a very pale, ash blonde pencil, with a light gel to brush them up and hold the hair in place. It’s much softer on the face.”
