Georgia Day’s Desert Island Beauty Picks

“What are your all-time favourite beauty products?” is a question beauty editors hear all the time and few are more qualified to answer it than SL contributor Georgia Day. Here, we asked her to choose the eight products she would take with her to a desert island…

The Lip Sculptor

Lip Definer, £26 | Victoria Beckham Beauty

Up until a couple of years ago, lip liners didn’t feature in my make-up bag. I’m not sure whether it’s because I didn’t really know how to use one, or I’d just not tried enough, but fast forward to today and it’s the product I have the most of in my handbag at any given moment. The product that sparked my obsession? Victoria Beckham Beauty’s Lip Definer. Out of all the many hundreds I have (now) road-tested, this is hands down my favourite. Everything about it is great, from the gliding texture and the staying power to the flesh-perfect range of shades, and I love how a few little scribbles is enough to lightly sculpt, shape, contour and define lips without looking like you’ve tried too hard. No matter what other make-up I’m wearing, my face now feels naked without it.

The Candle

Spiritus Sancti Candle, £95 | Trudon

Knowing that a scented candle would feature in this list was the easy part, it’s deciding which one that had me stumped. Like my fragrances, I love different candles for different moods (Glossier’s You for cosy nights in, Diptyque’s Feu de Bois to take the edge off a wintry night, Loewe’s Tomato Leaves to usher in a bright spring morning) but if I could have only one it would have to be Trudon’s Spiritus Sancti. A rich incense, olibanum and amber based candle that’s both heady and holy, it’s reminiscent of altar candles and the naves of cool churches in hot climes. Obsessed doesn’t come close.

The Fragrance

Another 13 Eau De Parfum, £170 | Le Labo

I love fragrance too much to even contemplate life with only one but in the spirit of the assignment, I would say goodbye to everything but my beloved Le Labo Another 13. I’ve tried to put my finger on why it’s so special and I think it’s because it manages to be interesting, unusual and alluring, as well as deeply familiar. A little bit dirty (thanks to animalistic ambroxyde musk) it also radiates brightness and earthiness thanks to notes of jasmine and moss.. Oh, and I must also give a special mention to Glossier You. Soft, warm, musky, skin-like and a real future classic, it’s too good not to get a shout-out.

The Serum

Phloretin CF Serum For Discolouration, £165 | SkinCeuticals

Alongside other impossible questions, I am often asked to name my favourite skincare brand. As you can imagine it’s virtually impossible to choose but SkinCeuticals would certainly be a frontrunner. I’ve used it for years and trust its smart formulations implicitly but if I had to choose one product to use above others it would be the excellent Phloretin CF Vitamin C Antioxidant Serum. We all know how important a vitamin C serum is for skin health, not just for its protective antioxidant power and ability to ward off free radical damage but also for its role in collagen formation. This formula has everything I need thanks to 2% phloretin, 10% pure vitamin C (l-ascorbic acid) and 0.5% ferulic acid for enhanced protection, and the lightweight, non-sticky texture is a pleasure to use. An absolute skincare staple.

The Mascara

Lash Idôle Mascara, £26 | Lancôme

Given that this is by far the question I am asked the most, I have had a lot of time to think about it. For me there is no question that Lancôme’s Lash Idôle Mascara is the best of the best. The only way to explain why it’s so good is to say that while most mascaras take a couple of months to warm up and come into their own, Lash Idôle does its (very impressive) thing the very first time you use it. Completely clump-free, volumising, lengthening, lifting, eye opening… I could go on, but it really does tick all the boxes.

The Moisturiser

The Dewy Skin Cream, £67 | Tatcha

Moisturisers can be divisive but when thinking about the products I couldn’t live without, I couldn’t leave one out of my line-up. It’s a big call but Tatcha’s The Dewy Cream is the one for me, the reason being that it has everything my skin needs in terms of ingredients and texture. While the formulation is full of hyaluronic acid, Japanese purple rice, a barrier-boosting algae blend and other botanicals like ginseng, the silky, gliding, velvety texture is what makes this so special. Every time I use it, my buttery, bouncy skin reminds me why I love it so much.

The Blusher

Flush Balm, £32 | Merit Beauty

One of the best products not just of the last couple of years, but in my opinion, ever, Merit’s Flush Balm in Beverly Hills is firmly on my list of forever favourites. More than just a blusher, the balmy formula is waxy without being greasy and melts into skin, leaving not just a flush of pretty colour behind but also a pretty luminosity. Despite the sheer wash of colour, the microfine pigments last for hours on the skin, so you rarely need to reapply.

The Cheat Inclusion

As an avid listener of Desert Island Discs, I know that bringing an actual person on to my imaginary island is forbidden, but this is where I’m afraid I break the rules. If I’m going to be stuck on a remote island with only the bare minimum of beauty bits to accompany me then I’m simply going to have to sneak Suman into my suitcase. Regular readers will know that Suman isn’t just the creator of the best brows in London (and Dubai, India and the rest of the world), she is, as far as I am concerned, the undisputed all-time brow queen. I first had my brows microbladed by her about seven years ago and since then have had three top up sessions to refresh the colour and shape. Not only have my brows never looked better (or garnered as many compliments) the real joy is that thanks to Suman’s artistry, attention to detail and absolute dedication to her craft, my brow routine has gone from a tedious ten-minute-plus grooming, shaping and shading daily routine, to essentially nothing. It’s one of the best beauty decisions I’ve ever made.
